Photography [7/19]

Veronica might have appeared more subdued than usual when her students arrived this morning.

"Morning," she said. "I hope you all remembered to wear old clothes. Today we're going to learn the process of film developing." She gave them a handout and briefly went over it.

"Okay, I think you're ready to hit the darkroom," she said, forcing a smile. "I'll be here if you have any questions."

Once they were finished developing their photos, Veronica let them wash their hands and then instructed them to take seats in the classroom again so they could brainstorm their prompts for next week before dismissing them.

"I'm enjoying it. Learning a couple new techniques, and definitely getting new ideas and practice," Parker said, considering the newest prompts. Joy. Hmm. "Are you having fun?"

"It's pretty fun so far. I took it for the easy work, though, I have to admit," said Janet. "But today, we get to play with chemicals. That'll be fun."

Parker gave her a tolerant look. "You and the chemistry. Jeez. How go the rest of your workshops? I didn't see you at all this weekend while we were all voiceless, either. Hang out in your room with Liz?"

"I only have one other. I'm taking it easy." Janet nodded. "Except for my clinic shift, yeah. I wasn't feeling up to socializing."

Parker grimaced. "Tell me about it. After one day of having to throw Nerf balls at people to get their attention, and a million 'long story, tell you laters' written on the whiteboard, I was ready to go out and cut out the tongues of whoever had messed with our voices. Forget trying to communicate after that." She made a face, and added, "And I wish you'd been on-shift when Jarod was there, damnit. At least you would've called or e-mailed me."

"About half a minute after we'd finished treating him," said Janet. "Did he do the stubborn guy thing and not tell you so he didn't worry you?"

"Yes. Moron." Parker's not getting over this any time soon. "Which would've been fine if I hadn't been calling for hours, and if the Radio didn't take ten years off my life with the broadcast." She grimaced. "It's only a few stitches though. Really. He's okay."

"What is it about men that makes them want to be so idiotically stoic?" asked Janet. "I'm glad he's okay."

"I have no idea. But I wish there were gene therapy for it." Parker rolled her eyes. "Any chance your buddy Murray will be here on Friday for Career Day?" she asked hopefully.

"Wait a decade or so." Janet nodded in sympathy. "I haven't heard anything from him, anyway."

"Shame." Parker grinned. "Hey, when you and Liz do that college tour she was talking about, do you think Murray might meet us for coffee somewhere?"

"I think he's a little afraid of you," said Janet, snickering. "I think we could talk Murray into coming to Boston for a visit. The last time I saw him, he wasn't feeling too well, so I'd like to make sure he's doing better."

"Poor muscled hottie," Parker said sadly. "Tell him I said hi."

Janet giggled. "I won't tell him you're coming for coffee," she said. "Feel like practicing your ambushing skills?"

"Definitely. I'll even ditch the heels in order to get the best reaction." Parker nearly bounced on her toes. "Just give me a week's warning or so at least. Gotta make sure I have permission to be off the Island." She made a face. "You and Liz are lucky you can get your 'Uncle George' to sign off on whatever."

"It's amazing what the power of guilt will do," said Janet. "And there are those other factors involved. The ones that only come with time. You'll get there. But this time you can tell your dad that you're going with honor-roll members of the senior class, including someone on Student Council."

"He'll be happy I'm checking out the Ivy League colleges early, too. Especially if I tell him I like Harvard best." She rolled her eyes. "Are you shooting for that, or Johns Hopkins?"

"I figured I'd save Johns Hopkins for medical school," said Janet. "Harvard should be good enough for an undergrad degree, don't you think?" Tell your dad you're going with the niece of a three star Air Force general. That usually impresses anyone that thinks they're going to have their kids make all kinds of contacts here."

Parker grinned. "Yeah, that would do it. Especially with my dad, who has brunch with the Secretary of Defense every other month." She shook her head. "Somehow, I don't think the fact that I'm going along will impress said Uncle quite as much. But tell him I'll try to talk my dad into more military contracts, if you want."

"Oh, that's all right, you don't have to. Most of the stuff that Uncle George deals with stays on military bases your dad's people won't have access to," said Janet. "Though I should ask him if he knows yoru dad. I'll probably get a call from him later this week. I sent a rather annoyed e-mail while suffering from magical laryngitis."

"Heh. I would imagine. God, I'm glad I never tell my father what's going on here. Sydney gives me a hard enough time as it is." Parker thought it was a *very* good idea her dad's 'people' didn't have access to the USAF stuff. Or vice versa. "Let me know what he says, either way. It ought to be amusing."

"He found out about the weekend we were wee," said Janet, who also was quite relieved about that same thing. "You should have heard that phone call. And I'll definitely tell you. He's probably going to be freaking out."
