Baking Workshop 7/17, Monday Morning

"Good morning," Piper greeted with a smile. "You're going to make oatmeal cookies today. With raisins! Unfortunately, I didn't have time to make samples for you. Sorry. I did bring muffins, though."

She pointed out muffins she had purchased earlier at J,GOB. Then she handed the students a list of instructions. "As always, if you have questions, do not hesitate to ask."

Equipment Needed

Mixer

2 Cookie Sheet Pans

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Spatula

Ingredients

1 1/2 Cup Shortening

2 Cups Brown Sugar

1 Cup White Sugar

2 eggs

1/2 Cup Water

2 Teaspoons Vanilla

2 1/3 Cups Flour

1 Teaspoon Cinnamon

2 Teaspoons Salt

2 Cups Raisins

2 Cups Pecans (optional)

6 Cups Oatmeal

Cooking Spray

Instructions

Preheat oven to 325 F.

In a mixer set on medium high combine and mix shortening, brown sugar and white sugar thoroughly.

Add eggs, water and vanilla on medium speed.

Add flour, cinnamon and salt on low speed.

Make sure that all these ingredients have been thoroughly combined.

While your mixer is still on low speed, add raisins and pecans.

Mix in the oatmeal.

Spray a cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray.

Use a teaspoon to shape the cookie dough into clumps.

Put the cookies on the middle rack and bake for 12-15 minutes.

Make sure not to bake them over 15 minutes.

Remove them from the oven and let them cool for at least 5 minutes before removing them from the cookie sheet.

"Let me rephrase that - I'm glad I don't have to eat everything I make," Sam replied.

Molly laughed. "Okay," she said with a grin. "Were your brownies that bad last week?"

She turned off her mixer after all of the oatmeal was mixed in and began spooning out cookies onto the cookie sheet.

"Well, they were brownie-like. I don't think they were supposed to be quite so crunchy though," Sam said. As he finally added the oatmeal to his mix, he accidentally set the speed to high again, sending some of the mixture flying out of the bowl and to the sides before he could get it all under control. "Um. Sorry."

Molly reflexively lifted her arm to block any of the flying mix from hitting her and giggled. "Maybe your mixer is out to get you," she said.

Sam scowled, trying to clean up as much of the mess as he could while still keeping an eye on the mixing. "It's evil and clearly needs to be disassembled once these cookies are made."

Molly giggled again and finished putting spoonfuls of dough on the cookie sheet. "I don't think Piper would like that," she said as she slid the sheet into the oven and set the timer.

"She wouldn't have to know. I can be quiet. I bet she wouldn't even miss it." Sam gave the mixer another glare before deciding that the batter was probably about as good as it was going to get. He paused for a moment, and then figured that he probably shouldn't take a chance with the speed, and just unplugged the mixer altogether to turn it off.

Molly laughed hard at that.

"Better safe than sorry, huh?" She grinned at him.

"I'd just like the rest of the dough to go into the cookies and not on me," Sam replied, finally spooning the dough onto the cookie sheet in oddly shaped clumps.

"It is easier to make cookies if you're not wearing the dough," Molly agreed.

Putting the cookie sheet into the oven, Sam shut the oven door and sighed. "I will never make fun of Dean's cooking ever again. This is so much harder than I thought it would be."

"Aww, it's not that bad," Molly said. "Your cookies are in the oven and nothing has exploded or caught on fire yet."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"Ah, you're learning the importance of the word 'yet'. This is definitely a good thing," Sam replied, snickering.
