Baking Workshop 7/17, Monday Morning

"Good morning," Piper greeted with a smile. "You're going to make oatmeal cookies today. With raisins! Unfortunately, I didn't have time to make samples for you. Sorry. I did bring muffins, though."

She pointed out muffins she had purchased earlier at J,GOB. Then she handed the students a list of instructions. "As always, if you have questions, do not hesitate to ask."

Equipment Needed

Mixer

2 Cookie Sheet Pans

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Spatula

Ingredients

1 1/2 Cup Shortening

2 Cups Brown Sugar

1 Cup White Sugar

2 eggs

1/2 Cup Water

2 Teaspoons Vanilla

2 1/3 Cups Flour

1 Teaspoon Cinnamon

2 Teaspoons Salt

2 Cups Raisins

2 Cups Pecans (optional)

6 Cups Oatmeal

Cooking Spray

Instructions

Preheat oven to 325 F.

In a mixer set on medium high combine and mix shortening, brown sugar and white sugar thoroughly.

Add eggs, water and vanilla on medium speed.

Add flour, cinnamon and salt on low speed.

Make sure that all these ingredients have been thoroughly combined.

While your mixer is still on low speed, add raisins and pecans.

Mix in the oatmeal.

Spray a cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray.

Use a teaspoon to shape the cookie dough into clumps.

Put the cookies on the middle rack and bake for 12-15 minutes.

Make sure not to bake them over 15 minutes.

Remove them from the oven and let them cool for at least 5 minutes before removing them from the cookie sheet.

"I have no idea how to use it." Alanna admitted.

"It's those knobs, up on the top," Angela said, gesturing with her own mixture.

Which unfortunately had dough on the blades. Some of it spattered before she could turn the mixer off.

"Um. Sorry."

Faithful glared at Angela and licked the dough off of his fur. "It's all right." Alanna reasurred Angela and began carefully combining the ingredient.

"Sorry, Faithful," Angela eeped.

She frowned at the recipe and added a little more cinnamon than it called for, then tasted the dough. Better."Somehow I'm guessing you didn't cook a lot at home."

"They better taste good at least." Faithful meowled.

Alanna sighed. "I'm supposed to know how to cook. Knights need to be able to survive and proper ladies need to know what to serve their guests. Problem is, well, my oatmeal is considered to be hazardous to ones health. I'm hopeless in the kitchen." She flapped her hands a little. "I gave my teacher food poisoning for crying out loud!"

Angela blanched. "Alanna? Please don't give anyone here food poisoning."

"I didn't do it on purpose! And I warn people before they eat the food. Always."

"Then if they get sick, it's their own fault," Angela said solemnly. "Should have listened to you."

"Exactly! I gave them ample warning and everything!" Alanna finished putting all her ingredient together.
chasingangela: (looking up optimistic)

"Right." Angela was blopping balls of dough onto her cookie sheets and sticking them in the oven. "It's too hot for this," she half-complained. "We should learn to make sorbet, or something."

Alanna nodded and began to spray the non-stick spray on her tray. She may have been very liberal with it. "Totally."

Angela nodded vigorously and, pans in the oven, began fishing in her bookbag for barrettes. It wouldn't be pretty, but she could get her hair off her neck.
