Language Classes Friday
Good morning.
If you're planning to attend the film during lab hours, please come as close to the hour as you can. I'd like to start the film right away.
There has been some issues regarding keeping track of assignments. I will post your assignments at
game_of_you every day. You can also email me if you have any questions, and I am available during lab hours and office hours.
Perhaps even when you're sleeping as well.
However, most of the time your assignments will be: study your vocabulary and practice with your classmates.
If you have not signed up for your in-class presentation, do so today.
I will post current class rosters later today. Please let me know as soon as possible if you wish to add or drop. Students who have not attended any classes by the end of today will be dropped.
[ooc: mun's employers have decided to make use of me today. will not be available much until later. class interaction is good when studying a language--fake it however you like.]

8:00 - 9:30 MWF Classics
The coffee I supplied last week has led to some interesting issues. I am reconsidering it. Meantime, I assume you all trust Starbucks.
Today's quiz is on the board. The first four are Greek, the second are Latin. Translate into English. Then translate the sentences into both Latin and Greek. You have fifteen minutes.
Today I want you all to use the vocabulary words we've learned so far and write a few sentences. We'll read them aloud and discuss the translations and grammar. You have twenty minutes.

His Greek sentences are fragments and seem to be about dinner.
His Latin sentences sound conspicuously like state mottos.

*fails miserably*
*swears and starts looking over make-up work*

Thomasina slides into what has become her usual seat at her usual time. Reading the instructions written on the board, she pulls out a sheet of foolscap and begins neatly writing out the required answers. The vocabulary all comes easily to her, as do the Latin sentences; the Greek ones take a bit more effort, but she is not displeased with what she has written when she passes her paper in.
10:00 - 11:30 MWF Indo-European
Your vocabulary quiz is on the board. You have fifteen minutes to translate ten words into English.
Today's topic of discussion is, what do you think influences language development? In other words, why do some languages have a word for an object or concept and others don't?
Re: 10:00 - 11:30 MWF Indo-European
*fails even more miserably*
*swears at Professor Methos for not tutoring her like he promised*
11:30 - 1:00 Special open lab hours
I want you to pay particular attention to the subtitles and if you notice what is left untranslated.
Enjoy the movie. We'll discuss the ideas presented afterwards, if there's time.

2:30 - 4:00 MWF Languages of Asia
Your quiz for today is translate the ten kanji on the board. You have fifteen minutes.
Once all the quizzes are passed in, choose a partner and practice the sentences for the last chapter. Don't worry about mispronounciation: we'll work on that as we go.
