Wilderness Survival Redux (Week One) | A Clearing in the Woods, Thursday Morning

Callisto did not look happy as she waited for the the class finish coming into the clearing.

"First things first. Those stories you've been hearing on the rado about shoe stealing? True." She held up a large box. "At the start of each class you will take off your shoes and put them in this box. You will get them back at the end of class, if I believe that you have paid sufficient attention in class. Otherwise I get to keep them for the week. After you've done that I want you to introduce yourself to the class and say why you decided to take this workshop."

"Since this is the first class, I'd thought I'd start with something fairly simple. Fandom is filled with many unique and interesting animals, from the ducks and giant squid, to the dancing lemers and weetiny bunnies, to the minature giraffes and shy, retiring teal deer, to John Crichton. Some of these are harmless, others dangerous, still more tasty. Which is why, when lost in the wilderness, it's important to know what animals might be in your near vicinity. One of the best ways to do this is through tracking, the basics of which I will be teaching you today."

Callisto went on to give a very interesting and informative talk on tracking. It might even have drawn the attention of a few teal deer.

"Your assignment today is to split into pairs and identify which Fandom animal made the set of tracks I've assigned you.

"Good luck. You're going to need it."

Pairs are:
1. Samuel Anders
D'anna Biers

2. Bridge Carson
Samantha Carter

3. Walter Dornez
Tyler Durden

4. Rory Gilmore
Gwynn Hood

5. Peter Pevensie
Dean Winchester

"What the frak?" muttered Anders, peering so closely at the tracks that he'd better not sneeze or he'd ruin them. "I don't think that thing even walks."

"I have no frakking clue. I'm not even supposed to be here!" D'anna groaned. (OK so maybe that last was a bit of a whine.) "Whatever it is, it left it's primitive communication device behind."

"You're not supposed to be here?" Anders asked, raising an eyebrow. "You didn't sign up for this class?"

He poked at said primitive communication device. "Okay, so it doesn't really walk, but apparently it likes to talk on the phone? Or maybe it got a call from a collection agency."

"Cooking and Baking! I thought it was Cooking and Baking!" Whine-whine-whineity-whine.

D processed the last of what he'd said. "And it scooted away in terror. Pick up the phone-like-thing. Maybe it has some info on it."

"Hey, at least this way you don't accidentally set yourself on fire. You might end up naked, but not on fire." Anders leaned over to pick up the cell phone, wondering how one got Cooking and Baking mixed up with Wilderness Survival, and scrolled through the call list.

"Unknown Caller . . . Unknown Caller . . . some number in some area code I wouldn't know, because I know frak-all about Thirteenth Colony phone number systems . . . maybe whatever creature this is was trying to disguise its tracks."

D'anna raised an eyebrow. "Naked? How is that possibly better than mistakenly setting your clothes on fire? At least then you're still covered!" And, yes, was a bit hypocritical for a Seawhore to whine about her personal state of undress, but she was on a whiney roll damnit.

"So... it walked on its tippey-toes and flicked its tail through the sand?"

"Not if it's your clothes you set on fire," Anders pointed out.

He examined the tracks and set his feet apart about as wide as the weird bits on the sides were, swishing an arm behind him like an experimental tail as he walked. Or waddled, more like. "Aren't dragons supposed to hoard treasure or something? Maybe it was a miniature dragon."

"Personal experience?" D asked before she had to stifle some giggles caused by Ander's waddle. "Miniature treasure dragging dragon? Completely possible. How about a mime walking on his or her hands while holding a flower in his or her teeth?"

Anders snickered. "I wouldn't rule that out either. But I don't think a mime would need a phone, right?"
