FH Library, 7/13

Angela was still thrilled to be back at school -- including back at work. She did a quick tour of the library, humming a little, pleased to be certain that nothing had been blown up. Then she went to organize the magazines, picked out the most recent Vanity Fair, and settled behind the desk.

It was a little odd not to have even a nominal boss, but Angela figured she could deal.

Jamie came in with the "A" volume of the encyclopedia and brought it up to the return desk. "Hi. This is a week over due? Do I owe any library fines or anything like that?"

Angela took the book and looked at the due date, then at the table of fines. "Um, you should owe seventy cents, but it's summer and we're short a librarian, so we could waive it."

She hefted the book. "So did you actually read this?"

"Yep," Jamie said with a nod as he dug out his wallet. "I plan to read every volume so I'll know everything in the world from a biased and slanted viewpoint of the western civilization. And I'll pay the fine, I'm a law abiding citizen after all. I'm Jamie by the way, I don't think we've met."

Angela looked a little confused, but smiled. "That is such a noble goal," she said. "And hi, Jamie. I'm Angela. You're one of the five zillion new people?"

"And then some," Jamie agreed with a little smile. "And I thought I've met just about everyone here. Are you a new student too?"

"I have been here forever," Angela said. "Well. Since last September. I just took a vacation last term."

"So how'd you end up here?"

Cally wandered up to the library counter and drummed on it with her knuckles.

"Heeeeey Angela," she said with a smile.

"Hi, Cally," Angela said. "What's up? Good to see you again."

"Not much, just came in to look through the library, that's all," she said. "I'm guessing you're the one with more interesting stories than me."

"Friend of mine drove me," Jamie said jokingly. "Nah. Seriously though. I'm a mutant and have had some problems recently with my powers and my memory so I came here to see if I can get them back."

"There were no Jello monsters anywhere I went," Angela said, shaking her head. "Um. Tahiti is gorgeous, my family's my family, L.A. was ... interesting but it was nice to see Angel anyhow, and Paris is really nice. Especially because everyone was watching World Cup so the tourist stuff wasn't too crowded."

AFter ten months at the school, Angela should know better than to expect a boring answer. "Oh," she said, only blinking a little. "Is it working? And what's your mutant thing?"

"Kind of," Jamie said with a frown. "I can create duplicates of myself that I can usually command though recently they've been kind of taking on a life of their own. Hopefully I can work that issue out."

"Wow, sounds like you guys had a lot of fun while you were gone," Cally said. "Personally, I missed the Jello monsters. I hadn't even thought about going to the go kart thingy, since it was so soon after I... erm, have you heard about that yet?"

Yeah. Definitely not a normal answer.

"Good luck with that?," Angela said, not sure what else to say. "So you can be in two placwes at once? That must be so, so useful."

Oh. That was comfortable.

"I'm cabining with Anders," Angela said by way of an answer. "I think it's kind of your old place? So I've talked to him a little."

She didn't mention she'd also heard it from Rory and Nadia. It was never fun to feel gossiped about.

"It has it's benefits," Jamie said slapping his hand on the counter and having a duplicate appear next to him. "Hey. Go get the 'B' volume of the encyclopedia."

The duplicate gave him a look. "Say please."

Jamie groaned. "Please. Pretty please. Cherry on top and all that crap."

The duplicate rolled his eyes and went to the reference section as Jamie sighed and turned back to Angela. "You see what I have to deal with?"

"Oh, so you're in Pangolin now?" Cally said, not exactly trying to change the subject. "It's a good cabin. I just had to, you know, avoid awkwardness. So now I'm... with your boy, actually. Over in Pot Bellied Pig."

Angela nodded, trying to decide if he had spent more time arguing with himself than he would have taken to just walk over and get the encyclopedia. Probably.

"Terrible," she said. "You should complain to ... yourself."

"Pangolin," Angela agreed. "And I get why you wanted out of there, eek. Are you doing okay in general?"

"How's life in Pot-Bellied Pig?"

"I do," Jamie said glumly. "All the time."

The duplicate returned with the encyclopedia and plopped it front of Jamie before giving a sarcastic salute. "Anything else... Master?"

Jamie sighed and absorbed him. "Sorry about that. Can I check this out?"

"Quiet," Cally said. "Erm, the cabin life, I mean. Me doing okay in general... well, I'm getting better. You do some pretty stupid stuff coming off a long relationship, believe me."

"He just went ... poof," Angela said quietly, then blinked. "And yeah. You have a card, right?'

Angela tucked some hair behind her ear. "Nadia might have said something, yeah," she said.

"Yeah I can absorb them back too when they start getting rude," Jamie explained as he pulled out his library card. "Sometimes I don't get to that quick enough."
