The danger-shop was set up to look like a cluttered workshop, every available surface covered in futuristic looking junk. Harper sat with his feet up on a bench tapping at a control pad and drinking from a can of Sparky's.

"Good afternoon class," Harper said, taking a sip of his cola. "Just find somewhere to take a seat and we'll get started."

After the class had found somewhere to sit or lean, he stood up.

"My name is Seamus Zelazny Harper," he said. "You can call me Harper. Now I could give this big inspiring Dylan-like speech about the universe, chaos and how we must and really, all you need to know can be condensed into two sentences." Harper held up two fingers.

"The universe hates you. Deal with it.

"And how to successfully deal with it is what you're going to be learning to do over the next few weeks, " Harper said. "And trust me, I've done more than my fair share of dealing with it.

"One important thing to realise is that just because the universe hates you, not everyone in the universe does too. In fact sometimes the only thing standing between you and a horrible painful demise is a group of friends not willing to give up on you. So to start with we'll be doing a number of team-building exercises." Harper grinned. "Of course, since the universe does hate you, and it's been my experience that nothing builds a team faster than your own impending demise, they aren't your regular team building exercises.

"But we'll just start off slow with some introductions."

"It would work in a setting with a chain of command and the person in charge can order someone. Good of the many versus the one and all that," said Elizabeth quietly, trying not to think about ordering someone to their death.

"I don't think Harper's from a universe with a strong chain of command," said Janet.

"I don't think there's a chain of command that would order you to do something like that," Sam said, visibly shaken by memories of Daniel and the radiation poisoning that had eventually killed him.

"Slingshot! Let's use a slingshot!" He bounced on the spot. "Sliiiingshot."

"DOn't think it'll work. THen we'd just have a giant fast-moving deathball. Unless... it's a really big slingshot..."

'I...don't want to think about it, to be honest," said Janet, giving Sam a sympathetic look. She was pretty sure she knew exactly what Sam was thinking of, since she was trying not to remember cataloging every symptom in minute detail as Daniel had experienced it.

"Me neither." Sam closed her eyes, but the memory didn't go away.

"You okay?" asked Janet quietly, glancing over at Sam again.

"I'm fine," she took a deep breath and let it out. Daniel was in Egypt, and still alive. She needed to get over this.

Janet resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Of course Sam would say that. "All right," she agreed mildly, reaching into her backpack and pulling out a chocolate bar. She broke a piece off and then offered the bar to Sam. "Want some?"

Okay, it felt kind of lame, but what else did you do when talking wasn't an option?

"Yeah, thanks," she said, taking a square and letting it melt in her mouth.

"Any time," said Janet. She studied the core. as she took another piece of chocolate. "So if we get you over there, you can disarm this without being hurt, right?"

"This?" Sam studied it. "Not sure. I've never seen anything like it before."

"Thankfully, I've never known that to stop you," said Janet. "Well, we have two things in our favor: First, you're a genius, and second, this is the Danger Shop and therefore that's not a real Nova Bomb core."

"If that's the plan that everyone else wants to go with, I'll do it," Sam said, quietly, "but I've already done this. Someone else might be better off taking it."

"Then let's give someone else a turn at it," said Janet, her voice matter-of-fact. "We could just stand in the back like delinquents and watch them work instead."
