The Kludge's Guide to the Universe | Dangershop, Wednesday Afternoon (Week 1)

The danger-shop was set up to look like a cluttered workshop, every available surface covered in futuristic looking junk. Harper sat with his feet up on a bench tapping at a control pad and drinking from a can of Sparky's.

"Good afternoon class," Harper said, taking a sip of his cola. "Just find somewhere to take a seat and we'll get started."

After the class had found somewhere to sit or lean, he stood up.

"My name is Seamus Zelazny Harper," he said. "You can call me Harper. Now I could give this big inspiring Dylan-like speech about the universe, chaos and how we must and really, all you need to know can be condensed into two sentences." Harper held up two fingers.

"The universe hates you. Deal with it.

"And how to successfully deal with it is what you're going to be learning to do over the next few weeks, " Harper said. "And trust me, I've done more than my fair share of dealing with it.

"One important thing to realise is that just because the universe hates you, not everyone in the universe does too. In fact sometimes the only thing standing between you and a horrible painful demise is a group of friends not willing to give up on you. So to start with we'll be doing a number of team-building exercises." Harper grinned. "Of course, since the universe does hate you, and it's been my experience that nothing builds a team faster than your own impending demise, they aren't your regular team building exercises.

"But we'll just start off slow with some introductions."

Molly starts moving, but it going closer to sideways than diagonal.

"Angle!" John eyes the mine near her shoulder nervously. "Little sharper angle. Like you're making a 'V' with your path, almost."

Molly froze again and then started moving in the correct direction, very slowly. "I don't remember how far I need to go now," she called back.

"Two more steps," he tells her. "After this bit, it's an easier path. Almost there. You're doing great."

"Okay," Molly said and kept moving.

This was way more nerve wracking that she thought it would be. Her arms were still clamped to her sides, but it was more to keep herself from lifting up the blindfold to peek than because she was worried about hitting a mine.

"Okay, you're through." He sighs in relief. "Two big steps forward, one big step right, two big steps forward again and we're through."

Molly also sighed with relief. She took two big steps forward, an extra big step to the side and two steps forward again. "I'm through?"

"Yep, the mines are all behind you," John says happily. "Through!"

"Yay!" Molly said and took the blindfold off. "Your turn."

"Okay," he says and puts the blindfold on. "I'm ready."

"Okay," Molly said surveying the field carefully. "Take one step forward."

[Okay. We can continue later?]

He takes one step forward very carefully. "Okay."

Now that she knew how big his step was, Molly felt more comfortable directing him. "Two more steps forward and then get down on your hands and knees because I'm going to have you crawl under a mine."

John grimaces but takes two steps forward and then gets down on his hands and knees.

"How low should I go?"

"Just keep your head low and don't arch your back or anything and you'll be fine," Molly said. "Now, crawl forward about five feet. If you go too far I'll yell out."

"Right." He concentrates on keeping his head down and keeping his back straight and starts crawling.

"Stop there," Molly called once he'd gone far enough. "You can stand up now. Just try not to move to your left at all when you do."

"Got it," he says and stands, very deliberately, straight up in the air.

"Perfect," Molly said. "Now take one big step to your right."

He does, wobbling a little on that step and nearly losing his balance.

Molly bit back an eep as he came really close to a mine floating behind him. "Doing good!" she called. "Okay, now take one baby step forward."
