fandomhigh | The Kludge's Guide to the Universe | Dangershop, Wednesday Afternoon (Week 1)

The danger-shop was set up to look like a cluttered workshop, every available surface covered in futuristic looking junk. Harper sat with his feet up on a bench tapping at a control pad and drinking from a can of Sparky's.

"Good afternoon class," Harper said, taking a sip of his cola. "Just find somewhere to take a seat and we'll get started."

After the class had found somewhere to sit or lean, he stood up.

"My name is Seamus Zelazny Harper," he said. "You can call me Harper. Now I could give this big inspiring Dylan-like speech about the universe, chaos and how we must and really, all you need to know can be condensed into two sentences." Harper held up two fingers.

"The universe hates you. Deal with it.

"And how to successfully deal with it is what you're going to be learning to do over the next few weeks, " Harper said. "And trust me, I've done more than my fair share of dealing with it.

"One important thing to realise is that just because the universe hates you, not everyone in the universe does too. In fact sometimes the only thing standing between you and a horrible painful demise is a group of friends not willing to give up on you. So to start with we'll be doing a number of team-building exercises." Harper grinned. "Of course, since the universe does hate you, and it's been my experience that nothing builds a team faster than your own impending demise, they aren't your regular team building exercises.

"But we'll just start off slow with some introductions."

Molly put her fingers out as directed. "This doesn't sound that hard."

"Why do I get the feeling that it's going to be an easier said than done thing," grinned Elizabeth. "This is why you try to take explosive experts with you."

Molly grinned. "I guess I just need to remember that I'm probably the only one who could live through the blast - if it was real - and be more careful than I normally would."

[Sorry. LJ notifications suck.]

Elizabeth nodded. "Those of us who would't live would very much appreciate that," she said, smiling.

[[ooc: No problem. Been having issues with mine too. LJ is teh evil]]

Molly smiled back. "Should we try this then?"

Elizabeth bit on her lip slightly nervously, but nodded firmly. "Yep."

"Okay," Molly took a deep breath and slowly began to lower her fingers.

Elizabeth followed Molly's motions equally slowly. "So far so good," she whispered.

Slowly, Molly started to get down on her knees. "Okay, now I see where this gets tricky."

"Hmm, yeah," said Elizabeth, frowning slightly as she tried tucking her legs underneath her and sitting on the floor.

"Whoa," Molly said and lowered her fingers quickly as she lagged a little behind Elizabeth.

"Sorry," said Elizabeth, wincing and raising her fingers to help compensate.

"We got it," Molly said with a grin as they evened it out. "Are you sitting comfortably? We can lower it until your ready and then raise it a little while sit down myself."

"I'm good," said Elizabeth. "Let's get you on the floor."

"Okay," Molly said and concentrated really hard on not moving her fingers as she shifted into a sitting position. "There. The rest should be cake."

"I presume we're allowed to not have our fingers touching it when it gets to the floor, right?" asked Elizabeth, grinning slightly.

"Once it's on the floor, I'm moving away as quickly as possible," Molly said.

Elizabeth nodded. "That sounds like an excellent idea to me," she said.

Molly's fingers finally touch the floor. "Okay, so, do we pull our fingers apart and just let it roll off? Now I wish I had long nails. They could act like little ramps."

Elizabeth tried not to giggle. "That would certainly be a unique use of long nails," she said. "I think that's probably all we can do."

Molly took a deep breath. "Okay, I'm going to start pulling my fingers away now."

"Okay," said Elizabeth slowly, watching carefully.

Molly slowly pulled her fingers back so that the rod would drop the last tiny bit as gently as possible.

Elizabeth tilted her fingers to help, holding her breath.

And the stick rolled gently onto the floor. "Yay!" Molly said even as she slid herself back along the floor away from the rod.
