Summer Session 2, Scoobying Workshop #1, Afternoon 7/11/2006 (Held at Jeff, God of Biscuits today)

[Roster]

A note was handwavily left at each cabin door this morning along with an e-mail, to cover all bases, letting the campers know where to meet, and that they should dress in shoes they don't mind running in, and clothes they don't mind getting jelly on.

Now, three tables along the window opposite the pastry cases are pushed together and covered with open white boxes of doughnuts. Yeast, cake, cruller, bearclaw, jelly, custard, cream puff and eclair, with sprinkles and without, they're all there. Chairs are arranged in a semi-circle around the boxes, and -- contain your shock -- where there are doughnuts, there's Xander.

Once everybody's settled down, he grins, and holds up a bavarian creme. "This is Scoobying 101; for anybody who doesn't know me by now, I'm Xander Harris." He waves the doughnut, because by all means reduce, re-use and recycle, even or maybe especially when it comes to jokes. "Actually, this is a doughnut and I'm Xander; Scoobying would be the thing you're in besides a bakery."

"Scooby is... well, it's a word we used to describe the gang of mostly normal people who ended up helping out one of our friends who's---" If it looks like he's staring somewhat bemusedly towards the area where Buffy's sitting, it's only because he is. "--kind of a superhero."

"The thing is, the girl in question's megastrong and martial-artsy--" Yeah, he'll skip using 'bendy' as an adjective this time... "--but she still ended up needing help from her friends, and we all found things we were good at that we could help with.

"So that's the deal here: not everybody has the flashy powers or the big guns or the superspy training, but everybody has something they can do to help. Hopefully by the end of the workshop you'll have an idea what that is for you, or at least know how to start looking."

"It makes sense to start out small, though - and you can't get much smaller than the guy who makes the doughnut run, right? Trust me, I speak from experience." He picks up one of the boxes of doughnuts and models his impressive doughnut-box-carrying talents. "But the idea is to get you thinking about how to make the best use out of the skills you have, no matter how little or lame you may believe they are."

"So today you have to figure out what's not lame about being the doughnut guy. In exchange you get...well." He points at the obvious -- though if it's not obvious or you're busy looking out the window, that'd be the baked goods. "If you can handle the job."

[OPEN LIKE A BOX OF DOUGHNUTS. Posted early because work is going to be wacky this week and next, so I have no idea when I'll be able to ping in.]

"Well, doughnuts contain sugar and carbs, which are ready sources of energy for those fighting evil. Um. They're very portable! And I'm takin' all the reasons so I'll stop now. And it's lucky to be the one sent to get them, because then there's no chance anyone else will, say, make you try to read squallin' Chinese if you're gone to get doughnuts."

"Well, if you have jelly doughnuts, you could make a trap for a bad guy since the jelly is slippery," Marie said. "And going to pick them up makes you lucky because you might not be in danger if the bad guy shows up."

Buffy gave this a long think. "Well... If you're getting the donuts, you get the first choice! That's always good, because you have to bring, like, a mix, but not all of them will be awesome. And it's handy because... Um. It keeps the fighting going?"

"The presence of doughnut," Sakurazaki explain, dispensing-Buddha-wisdom finger propped up signficantly, "especially particular kinds, can be important to remind one that the exteriour never shows what the interiour is. It may be dough, it may be jelly, it may be creme filling. Whatever it is, though, it is representive of the untapped individuality in each of us that will help us strive when we finally discover what it is."

"Furthermore, one cannot fight or plan on an empty stomach. And while doughnuts may not be particularly nutritional for the body, they are highly potent in nuitrients for the soul."

"And they taste good."

"And...in a pinch, they make great projectille weapons..."

"And...yes." She nods, biting back an urge to laugh.

Cally thought for a moment. "Erm, doughnuts are helpful cause they taste good, which leads to a happy team, and happy teams are more likely to get things done, cause they're not preoccupied being moody?"

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2006-07-11 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well Zero mentioned the sugar and the carbs. Sometimes they have sprinkles to. And sprinkles make everything better," Isabel said. "Occasionally chocolate icing or powdered sugar will leave a little icing or sugar mustache on the person who just ate the doughnut. And to be nice, you should point that out to them. And perhaps help them get rid of it. Which could be interesting and fun as well. And definitely a morale booster." she finished with a smirk.

Angela pouted. Most of the things she could think of had already been taken.

"I guess that if you got the donuts you could offer them to the bad guys? And maybe sometimes the bad guys would, like, be really into donuts and take them as a bribe."

"Er, well, you could always use a donut to make someone who is being annoying shut up by temporarily gluing their jaw shut. And if you need an excuse not to talk, hey, you're eating! ... Yeah."

"Projectile weapons," Parker held up a cinnamon donut. "Which maybe don't work on the bad guys so much, but if someone's falling asleep during a research session, they'd wake up if you bonked them on the head with one. Plus, they'd then have food so they didn't fall asleep again. And they can't say you don't care. You could've hit your teammate with something a lot harder." Parker took a bite out of the donut, and grabbed couple holes while she was at it.

Doughnuts? River looked at the pastry on front of her. She then considered the concept of a team, especially as described previously by Xander.

"Doughnuts are a symbol of unity and team spirit?" River suggested. "We eat doughnuts together, so we're friends. We can define each other in terms of doughnut preferences, which make us feel closer to each other. Doughtnuts could be exchanged for any other type of local pastry available. The issue of availability seems crucial. One should be able to buy them at anytime of the day, all year around."

Dawn pouted because all the jelly had been taken, and settled for a chocolate glazed. "Being the dude sent to fetch the doughnuts makes you lucky because it means you don't have to listen to the nine bazillion bad theories about whatever the stupid thing is that's coming to attack you that week. You get to come in right before the book person has their eureka moment. It's like fast-forwarding to the good parts of the movie."

She took a bite, then added, "plus, you don't have to watch all the coupley types be all snuggly when they're supposed to be researching."

It was a day for reflection, and Sakurazaki finds herself ruminating over a doughnut about the description of the class, worrying that she may have misunderstood its intent. After all, she was the one with the big guns (well, swords) and superspy skills...

...but did it really matter if there were doughnuts to be had?

Broots grabbed his box and then took out some wire from his pockets. He used the wire to make sure the box wouldn't randomly open up and then added a handle. His plan for getting to the destination? Trying to sneak by unnoticed.
