Library [07/05]

Rory was only there because it was her job and she had to be. Had she had a choice, she'd have been at the hospital, library or not.

As it was, she was sitting behind the desk, attempting to read.

Nadia came in on the break between workshops and started looking for books on World War II.

Specifically, Poland in World War II.

She didn't much like what she found out.

"I caught the podcast this morning before heading in here," Rory replied, thinking hard about what she'd heard that wasn't about the beach party. "I was at the hospital last night...is this about Walter leaving to go on a mission thingy?"

"Yeah. A mission to Poland during World War II which, heyhey, it turns out really isn't a very nice place to be." Nadia sighed, shutting the book she was looking through. "And congratulations on the new sibling, by the way. I'm glad everything went okay."

"Thanks," Rory said vaguely. "Poland? Why? I mean, of all the places to go during that particular war...." She shook her head. "He'll be okay, though."

"He will. He'd better. I know he can take care of himself, but. . . ." Nadia shook her head. "He's from that time period. And his boss back home wanted him to go on this mission to Poland. He really wanted to go, too. He was excited about it." She flipped the book back open, finding an image of the Warsaw ghetto. "He was excited about going into something like that. I just don't get it."

"I don't get it either," Rory said, shaking her head. "But then, if it's what he loves to do, it's a little easier to understand. At least, that's how I think of it when friends of mine and stuff go off and do dangerous things and try to give me gray hairs at the ancient age of seventeen."

Nadia sighed. "Yeah. It seems like a lot of people around here are like that." She closed the book again. "I've lived on the streets. I know that there are places that aren't nice in the best of times, and Argentina was just as bad as that not too long ago. I don't want him to have to deal with that stuff, but it's his choice."

Nadia shrugged. "His employer can always contact him, but I don't know if he can call or anything. It's not like they have email."

Rory sighed. "Well, that's annoying. Any idea on when he'll be back? 'Cause with the time flex, he could leave now and be back here by tonight, and have been gone for weeks and weeks as far as his perception goes."

"He could?" Nadia shrugged. "He said he'd be gone for about a week."

Rory nodded. "Anakin was gone for about a month over winter, and it was three months where he was. And if Walter said he'll be back in a week, he'll be back in a week. And he'll be careful, since presumably he knows what he's doing."

"It does. Anything we have on record that's about another student is in there, anything dangerous, anything pornographic," Rory replied, ticking them off on her fingers. "But it's kind of dangerous in there, and students need a pass from a teacher to go in."

An young Asian man with a briefcase handcuffed to his hand flickered slowly into view in the middle of the library. Once he was completely in view and relatively solid (bits of him were still flickering out of view, like a bad hologram), he looked around and said, quite calmly, "Rory Gilmore?"

The man nodded and walked over to her, holding up the suitcase. "I have a delivery from Gavin junior." He didn't seem wildly delighted about it. "Do you have an ID on you?"

Rory raised an eyebrow. "Prezzies from Jakey?"

She fiddled in her purse for a moment before pulling out her driver's license. "Um. Rory is a nickname. But that's me."

Lau gave the driver's license a thourough look, before opening the suitcase to reveal three folders with William Starbucks Gilmore-Danes' name on as well as additional notes like 'Gilmore World', 'Fandom' and '616'.

The courier glanced down into the suitcase and retrieved a piece of paper and a pen from a pocket. "Sign here, please."

Lau gave her a withering look, then seemed to decide that obviously any friends of Jake wouldn't know any better. "Knowing young Gavin -" Lau was possibly five years older than Jake, if that. " - Probably blackmail photos."

He waited for about five seconds. "Feel free to take them any second now," he hinted.

Lau just shrugged and closed the suitcase again. He took a step back, and began flickering out of view again. "Have a nice day and I hope you think of Internationl Infonet the next time you need something couriered." He sounded almost sincere.

Rory frowned. "I don't think I believe him," she decided.

She grinned as she leafed through the folders, finding unfamiliar business cards, but several sheets of paper (http://www.oneshare.com/stock.asp?stock=starbucks) that even she could immediately identify.

She made a note to email Jake to thank him later.
