"I think the usual answer is 'because it's this school'," Cally said. "Cheerleader captain, huh? I'm not a huge one for school spirit, I guess. Not like I walk around wearing the school colors ever day." She paused. "Not like I walk around wearing any colors, most days."

Buffy tilted her head to study her. "You know? I bet you'd look nice in yellow. Most people wouldn't, but I bet you would."

"Really?" Cally looked down and thought. "I just find that it's easy not to clash if everything's black. Though I suppose a little yellow wouldn't hurt."

"It would totally cheer you up," Buffy nodded firmly. "Or, like, maybe red? That works too."

"If anything, I'm used to orange," Cally said. She pointed to an empty table. "How about we sit over there?"

Buffy nodded in agreement, sitting down before blinking at Cally. "Orange?"

"Yeah, orange," Cally said. "It's the standard issue color for deck crew jumpsuits, for the Colonial Fleet. I have my dad's old one."

"You wear your dad's old jumpsuit?" Buffy asked, looking blankly at Cally.

"Only when I've got to work on something," Cally said. "Not, like, for lounging around in."

Buffy poked at the purple thing, relieved that Cally didn't somehow think her dad's old jumpsuit was the hottest in fashion. "What kind of work?"

"Tinkering, mainly," Cally said. "I built Pippi's outboard motor. And I helped Bridge with a lot of the repairs that ABC Damage Control did. I was the C, obviously."

"So you're, like, engine girl?"

"I guess," Cally said. "Though I'm hoping to be teeth girl after high school. Erm... dentist, I mean. How about you? Anything other than cheer girl?"

Huh. The purple wasn't that bad at all. Buffy swallowed. "Well, I'm Slay girl too, even if I've sort of quit, but it's kind of hard to do when there's, like, mummies!"

Cally swallowed the bit of pizza she'd been chewing and tilted her head. "Slay girl?"

"Ya-huh." Buffy nodded. "I'm the one girl in all the world, and so on, and I kill vampires. With impeccable style and wit, of course."

"Huh," Cally said, more out of mild surprise than disbelief. "Only the bad vampires, though, right? Not the nice ones?"

"Only the ones who eat people and fight me," Buffy nodded, remembering what Dawn had said about nice demons.

"Oh, yes, good plan," Cally said, taking another bite of her pizza. "So your slayer-y thing is what got you a one way ticket to here, huh?"

"You burn down one itty bitty gym full of vampires and you're deemed a trouble-maker. It's so not fair," Buffy sighed. She poked the yellow things she was starting to think might be melon. "Why are you here, then?"

"I got a free ride," Cally said. "Someone sponsored me to come here, and so it saved my folks a lot of money to send me here than go to school back home."

"Cool. What's back home?"

"Oasis, on Caprica," Cally said. "Erm, that's another planet."
