Leadership/Outdoorsmanship, Gun Range, Thursday Morning

Honor was already at the gun range when the students began filing in. Her principal guardsman, Andrew LaFollet, was two lanes down. Clad in protective eyewear, he stood with his feet shoulder-width apart, firing a flechette gun. For the moment, he seemed oblivious to the incoming rush of teenagers. Honor herself turned, removing her glasses and placing them next to the .45 caliber weapon on the counter.

"Good morning, everyone," she said with a slight smile. "Please make sure to sign in and then make your way over here."

She stood before several racks which had been set up, on which various firearms rested. Those familiar with firearms might have recognized the various .22 caliber pistols and rifles, flechette guns, as well as heavier weaponry, such as an MP5SD5, a P90, or an M16. Earplugs and eyewear were also available.

"Today, we're going to discuss firearms and firearm safety. For some of you, this is old hat; for others, this is new material. Given the serious nature of the weapons we'll be working with today, however, I expect full attention to detail." She leveled her gaze, making eye contact with each student. "Failure to do so will get you ejected from this session."

Satisfied that she had made her point, she launched into a lecture on gun safety rules. She then proceeded to take the time to demonstrate how each of the weapons operated; Andrew offered the demonstration on the operation of the flechette guns.

"You will get the opportunity to try each of the weapons. Please be aware of your environment, and your classmates. If you have any questions, please ask. Today, there is no such thing as a dumb question." She smirked. "Well, at least about the weaponry."

Honor then settled back and allowed the students to choose their weapons. She and Andrew kept a close eye on them, while making themselves available to answer questions as the students spent the allotted time practicing.

[OOC: OCD threads coming -- please wait for them. OCD threads up! Also, a zero tolerance rule is in effect: Have fun, but anyone horsing around will get kicked out of the workshop today, and might be assigned detention, depending on severity. If you *want* to get in trouble, drop me a line, and we'll take care of it. =) ]

"You could say that," Bel said. He glared at Claire. "Wish I could just shoot her with this and have her go away."

"Regular bullets won't do much more than make most ghosts laugh at you," Dean advised. "Though a shot gun with shells full of rock salt..." He grinned. "That they don't like at all."

"Really?" Bel said, intrigued. "Might have to try that on her. Maybe that would get her to shut up."

"It doesn't actually kill them -- or banish them or whatever you want to call it -- but it does usually make them go away for a while. Iron works on most of them too. Just be aware if you do go the rocksalt and shotgun route, that it doesn't make them any less insubstancial and you're going to hit whatever is behind them too -- walls, windows, people..."

"What happens if you just throw a handful at a ghost?" Bel asked. "Will that do the same thing?"

"Theoretically, but they usually just dodge out of the way. Barriers of salt sometimes can work to keep them out of a place, but that also is supposed to work on demons so might not be a great option for you. You might end up trapped inside even if the ghost is trapped outside." He looked Bel over seriously. "Might be an option to let you try and get some sleep at least though. But the most surefire way of laying a ghost to rest that I know is to find the body, then burn and salt the bones. I'm taking it that that isn't an option with your 'friend?'"

Bel shook his head. "I have no idea where her body is," he said. "They took her away after I...." He broke off from the thought. "The salt might be something to try, though. I don't think it would affect me. I eat salty stuff, after all."

Dean frowned, not really liking the idea that one of the oldest protections he knew might not work against a half demon. Even though, okay, he'd stop thinking of Bel as potential hunt and started thinking of him as potential information source sometime over the last couple of weeks. "Guess we can test out various barriers and stuff sometime and see for sure," he said.

"Only thing that works against upper level demons like me are vanquish potions," Bel said, carefully leaving out what they needed to be made from. "Or Power of Three spells. But you're welcome to try, so long as it's not like anything lethal. Might come in handy if Zotar demons ever come after me. Those are the Source's bounty hunters."

"Fun," Dean said. A whole bunch of demons that the normal methods might not work on? Yeah that would be barrels of laughs. "I'll take you up on that sometime."

But at the moment the problem wasn't demons so much as ghosts. "Y'know, judging from the information that came to light at last night's research session, it sounds like your ghost and all the others are trying to pull certain negative emotions from you so something can feed off it. It might help if there's some way you can... change how you react to the ghost."

"I killed her," Bel said bluntly. "How am I supposed to react?"

"Ignoring her doesn't seem to be working, either," Bel said wearily. "She just pops up again, telling me to remember. Am I supposed to give her what she wants or not?"

"What does she want?" Dean asked. "Does she demand anything?"

"She wants me to remember exactly what I did," Bel said with a shrug. "I killed her. I know that. Isn't that enough? I can't change the past."

"No, she's just...." Bel suddenly felt foolish. "She's just there."

Re: Discussion

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2006-06-30 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Sometimes that's enough," Dean said, taking pity on him a little. Yeah, sure, half demon, but dealing with ghosts that won't leave you alone was never fun. "So... it's not so much her that's freaking you out as it is what she reminds you of?"

"I don't like to think about my past," Bel said, nodding. "Not since I walked away from the Underworld."

"You might have to in this case," Dean told him. "If it's the only way to make the ghost go away. Otherwise you'll get all stressed out again and get another attack of demon acne and then you'll be haunted and all red and ugly. Don't want that."

Bel managed a weak chuckle. "Yeah, just when I thought this couldn't suck anymore." He sighed, running his hand through his hair. "Yeah. Guess I better face what I did."
