Danger Shop - Detention [6/24]

As the students enter, the Danger Shop appears to be a mostly empty room with a half circle of chairs in the middle.

The focal point of the half circle is a large white board which has a list of names on one half. The other half is covered at the moment.

Once everyone has arrived, Veronica begins briefing them.

"I don't know what you guys did to earn detention today and frankly, I don't care. Today we're going to solve a mystery and you're going to put someone else's well being before for your own."

She uncovers the other half of the board, which has a list of information about a missing girl, including a physical description.

"The girls' parents believe she has run off with her boyfriend and don't want to involve the authorities. It's your job to find her."

"I know I could never tell my family any of the stuff that I learned here. They'd think I was nuts. My parents were convinced that mutants didn't exist; that they government made them up to scare people. But now I know they do."

Charlie nodded. "I wouldn't have believed any of the people here existed unless I saw 'em for myself. So in your universe, there's mutants and the government is trying to get them to come out or something?"

"I guess?" Marie said. "I honestly didn't pay that much attention to the news coverage. From what Jamie's told me, it sounds like a bad thing for mutants though. If they register, they could become targets."

"I guess I can see why they'd wanna do it, in case mutants with special powers use them against other people, but then I suppose any regular human with the right equipment could do the same thing. And I'll bet the people trying to get it going are doing it for the wrong reasons. Politicians are usually like that. I hope it works out okay."

"So do I," Marie said. "Jamie said it didn't end up passing in his world, so I'll hope the same is true in mine once Congress actually starts holding hearings for it."

He nodded. "Congress is stupid, but you've gotta hold hope that they're not that stupid."

"Didn't even realize we were talking politics til you mentioned it." Charlie offered his packet of fries. "Want some?"

"Sure, thanks," Marie said, grabbing a few. "So what do you do when you're not in detention?" she asked. "You aren't on the basketball team, right?"

"Nah, I'm more of a hockey guy. We used to have a team, but the rink shut down. I don't really do much. Hang out, talk to people, watch TV, work out sometimes. I need a hobby. Really."

"Hockey's not bad," Marie said. "I don't watch it that often, but I do like it. I'm hoping to travel across Canada some day and I always figured I'd catch a hockey game while I was doing that."

"Can't go to Canada without seeing a hockey game. They're nuts about it. Any reason for Canada? I hear it's cold up there. But nice."

"The cold seems exotic after growing up in Mississippi," Marie said. "I want to travel up the east coast, cross into Canada at Niagara Falls and then cross the country to Alaska."

"Where all have you traveled? I haven't been very many places yet."

"Uhhh," he stalled while trying to think. "I moved around the US a lot when I was younger with my family because of my Dad's job. Been all over the world, but not for long. Just short trips. Africa, Europe, South America, Middle East."

"A couple, yeah," he agreed. "Some were a long time ago though, so the memory's kinda blurry. But there's some cool places out there that I wouldn't mind checking out again."

"You could do it too if you wanted. Just work, save up money and go. No reason not to." He smiled.

Kawalsky finished off his sandwich and then it was the end of the lunch break. "See you later, Marie."
