Nature & Nature Magic (Thursday Afternoon, 06/22/2006)

Today's class was meeting in the Preserve, which had been in a reminder e-mail Jenny had ~~*handwavily*~~ sent out.

"Where you find nature, you find nature spirits. The Preserve is pretty full of naturey places, and some of them aren't too off the beaten path. Today? Take a walk, grab a handout on deities and nature spirits, and see if you can find their home environments." Jenny paused. "First rule, no debating religion, 'kay? That can get nasty. Second, a guideline--nature spirits are pretty skittish, especially these days, what with all the tech around. So if you don't see any, don't be surprised."

Willow started walking, keeping her eyes open for anything.

Blair walked along, carefully watching out for anything magical looking. He had checked the handout and while he was pretty sure that Balder wasn't going to be showing up in the forests around Fandom; meeting the Scandanavian god of peace would be cool.

Tim had seen from teh syllabus what they were going to be covering today, and had ~~handwavily~~ gotten his wand/sword from teh weapons locker, stashing it in his duffel bag. He thought the magic of it might attract the kinds of things they were looking for, possibly be a nice conversation piece. He really should think about getting a scabberd for this thing.

It rained briefly while Tim was out in the woods, it was one of those rains that happened even though the sun was out. He looked up into the falling drops and saw a rainbow that seemed to arch down to just around the bend. Hmm, maybe he'd find a Luchorpan.
He didn't.

Instead, he found a clearing, in which a young dark haired, tanned woman was dancing, her clothing looking Native American in origin.

He stood silently, watching. She seemed to almost be either dodging the rain drops, or dancing with them. Suddenly, she stopped, and looked at him.

"What are you?" she asked, curious.

"Uh, I'm human." Tim said.

"Are you sure?" she asked doubtfully. "I've never seen a human as pale as you. Or with hair the color of fire."

"I'm sure. I'm, uh, apparently not from wherever you are."

She stepped up close to him, sniffing and peering. "Huh. Yes you are human. What caused your deformation?"

"Being born in a different country."

"What's your name?" she asked.

"Timothy Desmond." he said. "I'm from an island far to the east of here, across the ocean."

"And you?" he asked.

"AHMETO-LELA-OKYA." she said. "I'm a Kachina. Are all the people from your home as pale as you? And what's in your bag? It hums."

Tim recognized the name Kachina from his worksheet. Success.

"Some are paler." tim said, glad he'd told her he was from Ireland, and not that others who looked like him had invaded her people's land, stole it, and massacered them. "As for what's in the bag, it's a magic wand, that's been fused with a sword."

Her brow furrowed. "Why?"

Tim's brow furrowed. "I'm, not sure actually." ~~handwave conversation~~

Dawn started walking, but she was really okay with the idea of not meeting any gods in the woods. A sprite or dryad would be cool though.

"Oooh, squirrel!" Or, y'know, regular woodland creatures.

Willow hung back after class was over, hoping to catch Jenny's eye.

"Hey, Willow," said Jenny, smiling. "What's up?"

Willow was hopeful that her lack of knowledge in this area would come off as, well, lack of knowledge. After all, Jenny didn't need to know that this was after years of practicing magic, right?

"I was wondering if you knew anything about teleportation spells?"

"Of course," said Jenny, gesturing aimlessly with her coffee cup. "How come? Because that's some pretty advanced stuff for someone in a beginner course on magic."

"Present for Peter," Willow said. "Remember those three bracelets I made? I want to learn how to send them to his brother and sisters and given the whole dimensional problem it looks like teleportation's the only way to go."

"That's very nice of you," said Jenny. "But are you sure you wanna mess around with that stuff? Teleportation can be pretty darn dangerous, especially if you're not used to big workings."

"But the bracelets are small," Willow said, holding her hands out to remind Jenny of the size.

Jenny smiled at the gesturing. "And magical, which makes them a doozy to move," she said.

"Oh," Willow's face fell. "I hadn't thought of that. Maybe a box to put them in?"

"Might make it easier," said Jenny, after a minute spent calculating the possibilities. "But still tough. I can point you to some websites that would give you a grounding in the theory. It'd help explain why it'd be so hard."

"Theory would be perfect," Willow said, already pondering ways to hack this problem. She got out her notebook and flipped to a blank page for Jenny to write website names on. "I'm all for theory. It's like teaching a man to fish, only with women and magic and why can't we eat fish if we want to anyway?"

Jenny scribbled down a couple of URLs for Willow. "I'd say order the sushi, then," she said, chuckling a little at the analogy.

Willow grinned. "You got it. Thank you!"
