Archery Workshop #5, 6/20, Danger Shop, Afternoon

Miho had wanted to use holographic people who'd annoyed her for this, but then it occurred to her the administration might frown on that. So she's been fiddling with the Danger Shop's controls and has come up with what she believes is an acceptable substitute.

The Danger Shop is set up as a large, open room, with five large round targets apparently floating at the other end of the room. A line is drawn in blue tape on the floor, and the students' virtual arrows are fletched in different colors so they can keep straight who shot what.

Miho stood next to a blackboard at the entrance, a box at her feet. The blackboard read, Do not go past the line. Hit a bulls-eye, win a prize. Once everyone was present, she hit a button on the Danger Shop remote and the targets began moving on random paths within the area behind the blue line.

"Point," Parker conceded. "I'm envious of that. That, and the teleporting. Everything else you can keep." She frowned. "Did you have to learn how to do that, or did it just come naturally?"

"Powers are usually tied to emotions where I come from," Bel said. "So if you have the natural ability, you can instinctively teleport out of fear for the first time or make a fireball when you're angry. But it takes training to learn to control it, to do it at will."

"So, what? You were five, or two, and the first time you lost your temper, something caught on fire?" Parker shook her head. "That must've been a trip."

"About five, yeah," Bel said, nodding. "I was getting beat up by some of the other demon children and started throwing fire to get them away from me. Usually it takes a couple more years for the power to develop."

Parker gave him a sharp glance at the mention of getting beat up, then said, "A prodigy. Is anyone here normal, even for where they come from? It seems like we get all the gifted ones."

"I'm not normal, that's for sure," Bel said. "I'm the only half-demon, half-human. I had to learn fast to survive."

Parker took aim again, and hit closer to the bull's eye than before. "Do you mind an even more personal question?"

"Sure, ask away," Bel said, curious now.

"What's the natural lifespan of a half-demon?"

Bel chuckled. "I honestly don't know. No one does. Demons can live thousands of years. Humans usually have 100 at most. So I guess it would be somewhere in-between, closer to longer than shorter." He frowned a little, thinking about that in relation to Phoebe for the first time.

"Hmmmm." Angel has the Shanshu to look forward to, beyond Buffy's lifespan, or the lifespan of his friends. What has Bel got, to keep him good after his girlfriend's gone? "I probably shouldn't even make you think about it. But." She raises her bow, shoots, and yup, that's a miss. "Think you can ditch the Source for that long?"

"Probably not," Bel said quietly. "Sooner or later someone will find out that I'm not dead, and the Source will put a bounty on me. I can fight or run, but in the end, the Source will have me. No one defies him for long."

Parker drew the bow, sighted, and fired.

Inside the rings.

"Maybe you need to look for a third option. That Book of Shadows has to have *something* that can help." She paused, thinking. "A binding. A change. A protection symbol, I don't know. If you're a prodigy, and unique, there has to be a way to use that."

"The Book of Shadows usually isn't helpful to demons," Bel said with a shrug. "Vanquishing, hurting, trapping, yes. Helping, not so much. I don't know, maybe Piper or Phoebe could find something to help the human half of me though. I'll have to talk to them about it."

"Can't hurt." Hundreds of years would be a long, long time to hide from the Underworld. "And maybe there are other sources. Hell, if there's a Source of all Evil, doesn't there have to be a Source of all Good?" Parker shrugged. "Maybe you can appeal to a higher court."

"There are the Elders," Bel said, shaking his head, "but they're pretty narrow-minded. They have rules that have to be obeyed just as much as the Source does in the Underworld. They pretty much see things in black and white, and if they knew about me, they'd tell Phoebe and Piper to vanquish me. Same with Angel."

"Damn. I've said before, and I'll say it again. The rules on your world *suck*." Parker shook her head. "Anyway. I had to ask. It's probably not relevant while you're here on the Island, but later...." She re-aligned her next arrow. "It's something to think about."

Bel looked down at his bow and brought it up again, trying to focus on another shot. "Yeah," he said, his arrow finding its mark on the outer ring of the target. "They suck. And I will."
