Clockwork workshop

“Today” Agatha said as she pulled out boxes of springs, cogs, wheels and various gears “we are going to build the actual clock mechanism.” She pulled out two differently sized hands. “Don’t forget that you need these hands, as well as the mechanism to make them move. I have printed out for you a handout with images of how this one gentleman built his clock, step-by-step. You do not need to cut your own gears and wheels, but you do need to assemble them as pictured here.”

She took a breath and looked at her two students. “This may take you more then just today’s workshop. You are welcome to come in any day the shop is open to continue working on them.”

John works on his, wondering if he's supposed to put it under one of those dome thingies when it's done.

Archie spent most of the class period looking over the handout, with an array of clock parts spread out in front of him. He muttered to himself quite a bit, experimentally arranging and rearranging the cogs and wheels until they started to make some kind of sense. Even so, he had a feeling he'd be spending some time in the shop this week to do extra work.

After class, Archie approached Agatha with the handout still clutched in one hand. "As it appears I will be needing to come into the shop to do some extra work, ma'am, I had a question as well, if you don't mind."

"Well, you see," he explained, "for my birthday I was given a remote control sailboat. And while I find it quite entertaining, it's a more modern type of boat. As you are quite versed in all things mechanical, I was wondering: would it be possible to outfit some of my handmade models to do the same thing?"

"Some of the larger ones ought to have the space, I think," Archie replied. "The frigate and ship of the line, at least. I'll bring them in sometime this week then."

A thought occurred to him, and the corner of Archie's mouth quirked up in a mischievous smile. "I'd prefer to keep the modern boat intact, though; I had plans for a bit of a miniature naval battle."

"I'll likely stage it in the pond, so you're more than welcome to attend," Archie chuckled. "It will be rather more sanitary than a full-sized ship-to-ship engagement, but I can provide further details."

Archie went into a concise explanation of basic naval strategies as used on sailing ships, using some of the gears and cogs from the box of clock parts to illustrate.

"As for survivors, well, that's a different story. Cannon shot crashing into wooden decks creates a hell of a lot of splintering, and I don't mean slivers under the skin. Add to that the fact that medical care on deck was often rudimentary at best, and surviving an engagement did not necessarily mean a successful recovery from injuries sustained."

Archie nodded. "I never thought I would, but I've become quite accustomed to a more peaceful life. I don't know that I could go back to that, now."

"I think they would honestly be more surprised if I did come back." Archie chose his words carefully. "I've other plans in place, though, so God willing, it won't be an issue at all."

If John were to overhear, he would volunteer, as mock RC naval battles sound like a hoot.
