Clockwork workshop, lesson 4

“Alright boys” Agatha said as she walked into the workshop room and glanced up at the boys in question. “Today we are going to actually build the clock housing. Make sure to leave enough room inside for the mechanism.”

She placed several sets of tools on the table as well as some metals and woods.

“These should be all the raw materials you need. Follow your blueprints. Ask for help if or when you need it. Don’t get hurt.”

"Yeah, it was soemthing I was working on during Friday. I got a bit bored, and there wasn't much to do, so I juststarted tinkering."

"Just in case? It's kinda like your defense harness, but not as elaborate. Just two arms. And a tail, cuz tails are just cool like that."

John shows her the tail. It's not attached yet, as he spent most of his time replicating the left arm from the right, but it's multisegmented and looks a lot like Doc Ock's arms with a small 4 jaw pincer on the end.

John sighed. He took a deep breath to explain, and started coughing. He managed to choke out "No" in response to the questions.

Coughing subsided, John was able to respond. "No, it's not powered. None of this is powered, yet, since I haven't examined and duplicated your harness."

John was quiet. "I've thought about making it a more modern power source, but I'm afraid that if I makeit function too long, it will go out of control. And as for the body thing," he paused, thinking of a short blonde guy with a temper (and a red coat), "that may be something I'm not yet prepared to do. I've seen similar designs."

"FInd a short blonde guy with a red coat, and call him short. If he reacts, that's your man. Metal leg and metal arm, connected directly to his nervous system somehow. Alchemy, I suppose. It's good work, too."

"I think everything will go out of control. That's just hwo I think."

"I have little faith in man's control of things that were not his domain. Entrusting technology to take care of itself is foolish. Entrusting Man to take care of itself is foolish, as well, let alone to take care of another."

He blinked. "Yeah, I'll drag him around sometime. He's cool."

"I don't know whose domain they are once they reach sentience and start rampaging. Their own? I dunno. But we make things that we can't control and stand there with our thumbs up our... ears, wondering 'gee, what went wrong?' and I'm trying to stop that from happening." John fiddles with his 2 armed 1 tailed machine.

"Because there's too much error. Kids and machines, there's toomuch error. You can program, teach 'em as much as you like, but they're not controlled. They're inherintly random, and they can't just be controlled. A glitch here, a defiance there, and things start to spiral outof control. That's why I'm not building this thing with a great power supply. I want to make sure that it won't go on indefinitely, controlled by the user or not." WRENCHWRENCHWRENCH.
