Book Fair

Giles had gotten up at ack o'clock and actually had toted five boxes of books to the Fandom High Gym before he "cheated."

Everything was now set up neatly on tables, and separated by genre.

There was also coffee and hot water urns, bottled water, and a variety of pastries and breads set on a table near the register.

The First Annual Fandom High Book Fair was open for business.

[ooc: Hang on to your collective hats while I get the OCD threads up, please.

Threads are UP. Whew. I think you all know how this works. Go look for a book. Up to you whether you find it or not. No, there is no magic/new age section. Yes, Giles has planned it that way.

That's it! Go to town! Wait. No. Stay here and buy stuff...]

"Bah, radio," Isabel said waving her hand dismissively. "I don't take it seriously. And you're reading about Mantle because he was one of the best players ever. Have you found anything about Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig? Or Jackie Robinson? I bet you'd like reading about them as well."

Anders relaxed visibly. "No, but I'm gonna find stuff on them if I can. And maybe Ted Williams, and Hank Aaron. Man, I am so glad you're not makin' fun of me for that whole thing."

He gave a self-conscious chuckle. "Maybe I'm just paranoid. I mean, it's not like Parker doesn't tease me no matter what I do anyway."

Isabel leaned in. "Listen, if it'll make you feel better? I've got some Wendy the Werewolf Stalker fic floating around out on the web," she said quietly. "If that made radio? I'd hide with you."

"Parker teases everyone. But the thing I've learned is that if she teases you? That means she likes you."

Anders was disproportionately relieved to realize he wasn't the only person on campus who did things like that. "That does make me feel better, actually," he said, and gave Isabel an impulsive hug. "Thanks."

Isabel was surprised by the hug, but gladly returned it. "I'm glad I could help."

"Me too," he told her. "I've been freaking over that stupid thing for weeks now and it's been driving Cally nuts. Anyway, d'you find anything interesting?"

She held up the book (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0684852713/ref=cm_lm_fullview_prod_1/102-9223728-5504135?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155) she'd found for Greg. "I just picked this up for someone. I think they might like it."

"Wow." The book looked like something way over Anders's head, but given the student body here he wouldn't be surprised that someone would consider it a hobby. "Yeah, around here that, uh, might come in handy."

He spotted another book (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0385514379/ref=pd_bxgy_text_b/102-0914678-2210563?%5Fencoding=UTF8) on the shelf and grabbed it, adding it to the stack under his arm. "Okay, this, I definitely need."

"You do," Isabel agreed. "Absolutely. Have you considered taking a trip up to Cooperstown? That's in New York State. It's where the Baseball Hall of Fame is. I bet you'd enjoy it."

"Everyone is encouraging me way too much," said Anders with a grin. "Giving me free tickets, telling me where teams are so I can go see 'em, and the Baseball Hall of Fame too. You bet I'd love to go, but I kind of want to brush up on my baseball history some first, so it's not all over my head."

He pouted. "How come my actual schoolwork can't be this fun?"

"There are people that spend their summers traveling from place to place, seeing games. It's not a bad life if you can afford it," Isabel laughed. "Actually it's all a giant conspiracy to keep you here."

"How can you not be having fun in the workshops?"

"Oh, my workshops are fun," Anders amended quickly. "I just meant, you know, during the rest of the year."

He got a little glassy-eyed at the thought of spending all summer traveling around watching baseball, then shook himself. "If it's a giant conspiracy to keep me here, it's totally working."

"What workshops are you taking?" Isabel asked.

"Good, I'll report on our success to the rest of our collaborators."

"Cooking and Baking," said Anders with a significant shudder, "and Admiral Harrington's Outdoorsmanship and Leadership one."

He shook his head and grinned. "I knew you were involved somehow."

"It's not going well?" Isabel chuckled. "I thought you liked to cook. How is the Admiral? I was thinking of taking that course in the next session."

"Carter and I almost burned the place down," he said. "I think pancakes in a non-stick pan are about my limit. Crepes are seriously pushing it. But the Admiral's course is seriously cool. She's a little scary, but it's fun."

"You need to push your limits. Next time I cook, I'll call you. I'll show you some simple stuff," Isabel promised. "It is? I'll have to check it out then."
