Book Fair

Giles had gotten up at ack o'clock and actually had toted five boxes of books to the Fandom High Gym before he "cheated."

Everything was now set up neatly on tables, and separated by genre.

There was also coffee and hot water urns, bottled water, and a variety of pastries and breads set on a table near the register.

The First Annual Fandom High Book Fair was open for business.

[ooc: Hang on to your collective hats while I get the OCD threads up, please.

Threads are UP. Whew. I think you all know how this works. Go look for a book. Up to you whether you find it or not. No, there is no magic/new age section. Yes, Giles has planned it that way.

That's it! Go to town! Wait. No. Stay here and buy stuff...]

"Please tell me he didn't bring any of the scary books with him?" Sam said, thinking of the current plague situation.

He couldn't help but laugh at Dawn's assurance. "Right, sure you don't. I bet you have a secret stash of them somewhere, full of swooning maidens and gallant lords in frilly shirts."

"I haven't seen any here," Dawn said, meaning the book sale, "but he wouldn't be Giles if he didn't have some kind of a stash."

She reddened. "I so do not! Besides, the swoony maidens are boring and just make me want to smack them. Not that the gallant lords are any better--I mean, they're always perfect, and polite, and they always fall madly in love with the heroine, never the heroine's sister, or her best friend..."

Yeah, she was ranting a little.

Sam put his hand over his mouth to try to stifle his snickering. "Don't stop there, tell me more about these books you don't read."

"Oh, shut up," Dawn said, still bright red. "Or I won't give you what I made you, and then you'll be oh so sad."

"You made me something?" Sam asked, shifting gears appropriately, despite how adorable Dawn looked when she blushed.

She nodded, a little shyly. "Yep. It's back in our room." And something about that phrase made Dawn smile brightly at Sam. "No promises, but hopefully it'll help you a little bit on Saturday."

The way Dawn was looking at him made Sam smile in return. "Are you going to tell me what it is, or are you going to get revenge through suspense?"

Re: Non-Fiction--Language

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The suspense option was kind of appealing, but Dawn gave in. "I made you a necklace in nature magic yesterday. For, um, protection and focus. With runes. And you don't have to wear it if you don't want, because I know you're going up against things that might want to choke you and you shouldn't give them a handle," she paused for breath, "but maybe put it in a pocket or something?"

Sam wanted to say that not everything tried to choke him, but it didn't seem right to lie to Dawn when she'd done something so nice. "I'll definitely wear it," he said. "I'll find a spot where it can't be grabbed. Hopefully, we won't need much help," he added. "We've got a good group of fighters together."

"I know, which is why I didn't push harder to go," Dawn explained, maybe a little defensively, "but that doesn't mean I won't worry about you. And Dean and Buffy."

She hoped Buffy kept them safe.

"Hey, we're going to be fine, all three of us," Sam said seriously. "I'm not going to let anything happen to Buffy, and if there's one person who can handle himself in any situation, it's Dean. Don't worry too much, all right?"

Re: Non-Fiction--Language

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Dawn nodded, even though she knew she would anyway. "Buffy can take care of herself, you know. She's stronger than she looks."

"Just because she can take care of herself, it doesn't mean she should have to," Sam replied.

"Well, no," Dawn hedged, fidgeting her feet and accidentally stepping on a frog, which hopped away before she noticed. "But it's not like having to keep me safe. She really knows what she's doing."
likethegun: (i'm smiling to the left)

"I bet once we work on your hand-to-hand skills, you'll know what you're doing too." Sam smiled and gave her little nudge, hoping it would be contagious. "I'll try to hold back on being too protective then. I don't want to end up acting like Dean."

"Alanna's teaching me how to use a sword better, too," Dawn told him, smiling, even though she knew she'd never be as good as Buffy, "so maybe next time I'll be able to go with you."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

Clearly, his Dean-like instincts were pretty well hard-wired, since his first thought was strong concern for Dawn's safety. "I'm going to hope that there won't be a next time. But if there is, then yeah, I'd hope you'll come too."

"You're not going to allow me to have even the slightest delusional fantasy that we won't have to do this sort of thing here again?"

Re: Non-Fiction--Language

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I'm sorry," Dawn giggled, "forget I said anything. Carry on as you were. Would you like a paddle?"
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"To help my travels down the river of denial?" Sam replied, laughing. "That would be nice. The water is always very calm here."

Re: Non-Fiction--Language

Sam laughed. "All right, maybe I should just accept that we'll probably be doing something like this again."

Re: Non-Fiction--Language

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"You sure?" Dawn laughed, "because I could probably go on. It's not a bad thing, Sam. Just a fact of life if you're me, or know me, or know someone who knows me..."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"Or if you're a member of my family, or a friend, or cross my path on the wrong day," Sam continued, nodding. "Yeah, I know, you're right. I don't know if I can stop hoping though, that one day that won't be true."
