Things to Do at the Beach #3, Galactica Point, Friday Morning

Jarod waited for the class to arrive under a makeshift tent. Next to him were plastic shovels and pails. And a large group of kittens that had gotten curious about what he was doing and had decided to sit in. One or two were in the pails, either playing or curled up and sleeping.

"Good morning, everyone. Unfortunately, because of Fandom's...eccentricities," he looked at the kittens, then the pudding, which occasionally glopped from the sky, "I don't feel safe sending you out on the water today. But that's not all that you can do at the beach," he continued, "Today you'll be making sand castles--but they don't need to look like castles, if you feel like being more free form about it. There are also frisbees and a volleyball, if you want to play with those instead."

"Considering that you were seeing things? No, I don't think you were losing it too badly. It was just," Jack hesitated, looking for and discarding words, "worrying. Seeing you like that, not being able to do anything to help." He brushed his hand across hers. "Luckily Izzy was around to fix whatever it was that was wrong."

"Having her confirm that it wasn't just me helped tons." Parker turned her hand over, and captured his. "But knowing you cared was pretty damn cool too."

Jack squeezed her hand. "Of course I care," he said quietly. "Anything I can do for you, I will." After a moment he grinned and said, "Even calling people out of the blue and asking them out. I don't know if you got my message, but they all called back. With the result that I have a date with Z, what probably isn't a date with Jamie, and a very confused Peter who's willing to speak to me in a public place."

"I got it, but couldn't make sense of it, which says more about me than you," Parker said, chuckling. "Yay date-- I like Z-- yay not-a-date, although you never know, since Jamie has his laundry done at the Sin and could be into anything without looking like it, and yay Peter. I did see all them last night at the mummy meeting, but it's nice to know they didn't disappear while my back was turned." She sobered, studying him intensely for a moment, then giving him another bright smile.

"What is it?" he asked, responding to the look.

"Nightmare flashback." She worried her lower lip, then said, "The next time you disappear? You'll tell me, right? I mean, before you go back to the 50th Century, you'll say good-bye. Won't you?"

"Fifty-first century, and yes. I'm not going to disappear on you, Parker. Not without saying goodbye, not again." He studied the ground for a minute before saying quietly, "Not as long as I have a choice, anyway."

"Choice." Parker might have sounded a little bitter, but her expression was resigned. "Yeah. I do get that. No blame attached. Just... keep it in mind. I don't like being left. At all." She dug a little trench in the sand with her finger, and said, "Depressing subject. Tell me a happy thing. Anything."

"I don't like having left." Jack watched her dig the trench, then grinned. "You did hear me say I have another date, right? That's not happy enough for you?"

"Oh, sure. Ply me with your vicarious dating. Where's the seduction? Where's the topless bar dancing? We need to get you your own soundtrack, damnit." She grinned evilly, suddenly. "Ooo. I know this mariachi band? I could hire them for the day, for you."

"Anytime you want seduction and topless bar dancing, just ask." He met her grin with a look of complete innocence. "Maybe you could hire the mariachi band for the Jack-kissy night Jaye is apparently organising. Which I'm sure you could come along to, if you wanted less vicariousness."

Parker whapped him on the shoulder, and rolled her eyes. "I already know the Jack-kissy is great, but I don't have to re-experience it. Although I may want to take pictures," she added, looking thoughtful. "She hasn't set a date for this yet, has she? 'Cause I am so there."

"As far as I know, it's only a vague idea, but one that I fully support. And I'll tell you the details if you promise to give me copies of any photos."

"Deal," Parker said instantly. "I'm holding you to that. To both those promises," she said, her voice mild. "And I'll buy you drinks after."

"The only way they're going get me to leave without telling you is if they knock me unconcious and drag me away." He loooked at the ground briefly, then met her eyes, grinning. "Of course, that could also be how the Jack-kissy night might end. If I'm very lucky."

Parker whapped him on the arm again, but she was grinning. "Cool."
