Creative Writing [Wednesday, Period Two]

Class was in a normal classroom this week, and Aphra and Isabela were already present, so there were probably not going to be any shenanigans this week. Probably.

"Now that we've gotten introductions out of the way," Aphra started them off. "We're going to talk about the most important skill you can have when engaging in creative endeavours."

"Ideas!" Thank you Isabela, for being so enthusiastic there. I'm sure everyone appreciated it. "They say there's no such thing as a bad idea, but some are better than others."

"You have a good enough idea, and no one will care about how badly you write." Though grammar was important, kids.

"So for today's exercise we want you to just come up with as many ideas as possible, just throw things at the wall and see what sticks."

"And by throw things at the wall, we mean write it on this whiteboard, and if anything someone else has written sparks another idea, write that down as well."

The main thing Luma had at the moment was just her recent biggest gripe about a lot of the books she'd been reading lately:

Romantic but not in a frustrating way

Do not get her started, ugh.

"Frustrating how?" There'd been love stories in some of the pulps he'd read and he'd had his own reasons to roll his eyes, so his curiosity was genuine.

Well, don't say the narrative didn't warn you, Caleb.

Luma huffed out in irritation at the question, frowning at what she'd written with her arms folded in front of her. "Well," she stated, "for starters, when the main characters are absolutely silly and ridiculous over each other, or when one of them is clearly just terrible and awful yet for some reason I'm supposed to believe that anyone would fall in love with them. And if I never read another love triangle again," her lip curled particularly at that, which highlighted the long, canine sharpness of her teeth, "it'll be too soon! They're cheap and lazy and is it really too much to ask that two people fall in love and can enjoy it without someone else coming along and messing everything up for them?"

It was said with a passion that seemed to border on something beyond just literature, really, and she huffed again, simmering in her annoyance, before she blinked and then nodded at what he had written on the board.

"What's a Snallygaster?"

That all made a lot of sense. Caleb particularly agreed with how some romantic leads seemed to be horrible people. "I get that." he nodded, and actually jotted down in his notebook no love triangles.

"The snallygaster's a monster that may or may not actually exist. The stories come from western Maryland, about a critter that looks a bit like a winged lizard with a beak and/or tentacles. Eats sheep, and drinks moonshine."

"I wonder if that was covered in one of my Cryptozoology classes last semester that I missed," Luma mused, trying to think back, but it didn't sound familiar, but, if she was honest, she mostly just rolled her eyes in that class, so she wouldn't be surprised if it just slipped out of her memory.

She considered Caleb's statement again and nodded, too. "I agree," she stated. "That it's not evil, then." She pushed her hair back over her shoulders. "I take it people think it is?" A faint snort. "For just following its own nature?"

"There's a sad tendency among folk to label anythin' strange or different as evil. It can be tricky back home because so many things that seem evil are, but plenty aren't."

Some were just nice ladies who helped rural communities and kept monsters at bay, and/or ran parlor houses.
