Today we're going to start with the tenets of the Jedi Order," Anakin said. "The viewpoint of the galaxy we operate from."

"Like any set of ethical principles, they present a kind of simplified ideal, in practice there is of course nuance and interpretation," Ahsoka said.

"Exactly," Anakin agreed. "Just because the Jedi Code says something doesn't exist, it doesn't erase it from the galaxy . It means we as Jedi must diminish it's impact in our lives."

"Diminish isn't the word I'd use," Ahsoka replied. "But it does require making choices about what to prioritise." Or who. Anakin.

"What would you use instead?" asked Anakin Skywalker, dumbass.

"Prioritise," Ahsoka repeated, slowly.

"Right," Anakin said. "I knew that!"

Clearly not.

"The first verse is 'There is no emotion, there is peace.' Explain what that means, Ahsoka."

"Well, to make things clear, Jedi don't pretend we have no feelings," she said. "We experience the entire range of emotions like any other sapient, some quite deeply, and there's no shame in that, but we cannot allow ourselves to be ruled by them, to let them override our judgement." Like say, taking an apprentice who was nearly Force null because she was the absolute opposite to your own, overpowered master, not that Ahsoka making some assumptions about future her or anything. "We work to understand why we're feeling how we do, then let go of those feelings, so that our minds are clear when we act."

Anakin nodded. "So let's discuss what sort of techniques you would employ to let go of strong feelings and seek clarity for decision making."

"When in doubt, meditate." It was both a hint and fairly practical Jedi life advice.

How do you deal with strong emotions? Meditation? Journaling? Whiskey? Chainsaw?

That . . . was a good question. Quinn frowned, thinking it over.

"I don't know," she finally admitted. "They're just kind of . . . muted."

'Calloused over' was how she'd described it to herself in the past. The joy of so much trauma in such a short time that you unconsciously just shut down all emotion entirely.

"Hm," Anakin said, brows furrowing. "You don't feel things strongly?"

Quinn shrugged again and shook her head. “Like, I have opinions about things. But feelings. . . .”

Feelings led to caring about people. And people Quinn cared about in more than the abstract tended to die.

"Feelings are trickier," Anakin guessed.

“No,” Quinn said. “They’re . . . quieter.”

"Drinking?" Henry offered.

If he'd any self-insight he may have said something about just trying to keep on and keep pretending everything was normal, but he did not, so... drinking.

"Seems to be the most efficient, as far as I know."

Let's maybe work on drinking and another way of working through emotions," Anakin said. "Do you like going on walks?"

Henry rubbed the back of his head. "Well, I do a lot of walking..."

"That's good," Anakin said. "Walking helps clear your head."

"Pour it into my work, or go spirit walking to calm down," Sairis offered.

"How does spirit walking work?" Anakin asked.

"I mark out a summoning circle and lie down in it, then I go into a trance and my spirit visits the Shadow Lands," Sairis answered.

Not the weirdest thing Anakin had heard! "And how does that help you regulate your feelings?"

"The Shadow Lands are calm," Sairis answered. "It's a place to go where there's nothing awful." Well, there was death, but he didn't consider that to be awful.

Did Charlie have any really strong emotions? Besides her constant cheerfullness? Did she have a lot of clarity in decision making?

All good questions.

"Huh," she said, tipping her head to one side. "I guess I pretty much just go with the flow."

"Always?" Anakin asked.

"Well..." Charlie said, considering, "When I got totally lost in the Wood, that was pretty bad. I threw up a lot when I got out. Then I drank a lot that night, so..."

She shrugged again. "But usually, yeah "

"I...am not good at strong emotions. At moving past them," Stark said.

"Meditating can help. Sometimes."

"Why do you think you get stuck?" Anakin asked.

"Because I'm me," Stark said. Look. He wasn't wrong, was he?

"I'm trying to be better at it. But sometimes it's easier to hold on to whatever it is than to try and work through it. Or move past it."

"Do you hold onto just negative emotions, or onto every emotion that's strong?"

"Negative ones are louder," Stark said with a sigh. "And more common, often."

"Why hold onto to emotions that make you feel bad, then?" Anakin asked.

Did this feel like an uncomfortably apt class given what Rey had going on these days? Maybe.

"I try to give myself a project," she said. "Something to work through, either to think things through or to not think."

"Does it help?"

"Most of the time," she said. "Sometimes you're just stuck with it."

"Oh man, that's a complete Vulcan vibe you guys have going on there," Mariner said. "I mean maybe not a complete one, since Vulcans are very big on pretending they don't have emotions, like logic all the way, but there's still all that emotional regulation and meditation you know?"

Had she completely avoided answering the question? Mariner would've been shocked, shocked at the suggestion.

"So you don't use meditation or emotional regulation?"

Sairis had asked the large, elk-like creature in the office how to speak to the Dean and had been informed that he was taking a class with him, so he was approaching Anakin after class.

"Yes?" Anakin asked.

"Dean Skywalker," Sairis said with a little bow, "I was told to speak with you to find out if there were some sort of workroom I might be able to use."

"What sort of work would you being doing in it?" Anakin asked.

"Magic," Sairis answered. "Making charms and potions and spirit-walking mostly. There isn't much room in the dormitory bedrooms, and things can be occasionally...odorous."

"So you'd rather make the school smell instead?" Anakin asked with a small smile.

"I'd rather find out if there are rooms designed for such things that are out of the way or designed to handle the smell," Sairis said.

Wasn't that what work rooms were for?

Six days of virtual training. Thrilling.
