"Good morning," Thor greeted his students once they had assembled in the Danger Shop, which was set up to look like a training facility, with mats on the floor and racks of weapons lining the walls. "I am Thor, and this is Combat. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the facility, we are currently inside a simulation, with safeguards in place. You cannot come to any great harm here, but I find that some little harm is necessary when learning to fight. You must learn how to take a fall. You must learn how to take a hit. Some of this knowledge will come with bruises, with aches that remind us of our limits so that we may surpass them.

"I fear I am not particularly well-acquainted with any of you, so we shall begin with the customary introductions. Fear not; unless you have another class today it is the last time you shall be subjected to them this semester. Please tell me who you are, and your level of experience with combat or self-defense, and in what form. Let me know what I am working with, and then I will know where we should begin."

Well, your teacher certainly looks the part.

The teacher looked the part of a knight.

Sairis had very bad experiences with knights.

He was looking really dubious. But also on edge and possibly ready to fight? So at least he was doing okay for this class.

Please tell him at least one of you knows how to throw a punch.

"I'm Sairis. I use magic."

He did not punch. He killed people from a distance by pulling their souls out of their bodies or setting them on fire. Did that count?

Thor waited for a moment to see if he was going to continue before he prompted, "And?"

"And I'm good at it?" Sairis wasn't sure what more you were looking for, Thor. That was how he fought.

Odin give him strength, the child was being obtuse. "I am sure that you are. And when your magic fails you?"

"I run away or I die." Were there other options? Did he look like a fighter?

"Unacceptable," Thor told him. "You will learn." There, that was settled.

"Learn what?" Sairis asked. He wasn't a wimp, but he wasn't exactly knight material, either.

"Combat," Thor told him.

"I never would have guessed that from the class title," Sairis said, deadpan. "What kind of combat? Daggers, swords, pikes, bows?"

Bows took aiming, right? Maybe he could do that.

"That is to be determined," Thor told him solemnly. "Hand to hand, for a start."

At the very least the child needed to know how to throw a punch.

Sairis looked up (and up) at Thor. "We're not expected to fight you, are we?"

If he had to fight someone Thor's size, he was absolutely using magic. He had no intentions of being beaten bloody.

"Hi, I'm Arden. Arden Finch. I have taken several combat and self-defense classes before, at least, um, five? And I'm taking the other one offered this semester, too. But they all focused on different things, so I'm very 'jack of all trades, master of none' about it."

But she could at least throw a punch!
