Clockwork workshop, lesson 3

“Alright guys. Now that you have figured out what your clocks will look like, please show me what you have.”

She gestured to some blueprints she had pinned to the wall. They were for a very simple coo-coo clock.

“That is what I will be making.” She smiled. “Now, before we begin building the internal mechanism, we need to understand exactly what all the inner bits do.”

She pulled out one by one and demonstrated the functionality of gears, clockwork, and springs.

“You can play with these for today, but I want you to really really understand what they do. For next week, I want you to find 3 objects on this island that use any or all of these mechanisms in their workings. Don’t bring me a clock though, that is cheating.”

John signed in. he was showered and was wearing clean clothes, but he still looked horrible.

Archie's design (http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/landfallnav_1900_24450175) was probably more complicated than he could reasonably handle. But it was pretty.

John had a bug about a particular design, (http://www.skinz.org/skins/51/377/CLOCKWORK-ORANGE_fullsize.jpg) but it would be hard to do. So he decides to make a more practical design (http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/LRG/images/41%20mechanical%20clockwork.jpg). It's a working orange clock!

Archie took a few minutes to play with the springs as Agatha had shown him the other week, coiling them up and feeling the resistance as they tried to uncoil against his fingers. He moved on to the gears and fit two of them together, examining the way the teeth interlocked and caused motion.

The clockwork was a little more complicated, though, and he spent the rest of the workshop carefully puzzling over it.

John set up some gears and springs. For some reason, it wouldn't tick off at 1 second. IT would be either fast or slow.
