Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

The main campfire had been turned into a tropical paradise... without the tropics. There were leis and grass skirts to wear, tropical music playing, a buffet table, and the infamous Limbo Stick of Destiny, an artifact brought back to America from World War II. Noody knows what happens when a person wins a limbo competition involving the Limbo Stick of Destiny, but several experts on the subject suggest that "absolutely nothing happens except maybe you win a little trophy."

It was party time at the Fandom High Summer Camp.

[OOC: OCD is up. Yes, there is pig, poi, and sometimes the band will switch from generic tropical music to 60's beach movie music, or maybe reggae, or Raffi. They're unpredictable like that.

The luau takes place during a long break in the rain that [livejournal.com profile] fh_weather is reporting. Yes, I'm modding the weather. Admin privilege.]

"Can I worry a little? I'm really good at it."

"Only a little bit, because the teacher that ran my detention is gone. So I don't think nightmares are an issue any longer."

[in out and about for the day. Slowplay okay?]

"Oh, that's good," she said, relieved. "I didn't even think to check who has detention."

[Absolutely!]

Isabel rolled her eyes. "Unfortunately that's one of detentions special thrills. You never know who's going to be running it until you walk into the room. And then it's too late to run screaming for the door."

"You're not exactly filling me with confidence here, Isabel," Dawn told her.

"Sorry Dawn. It's just...Detention is a bit of a sensitive spot with me. I got picked for the lottery and had a really bad detention right when a lot of really rough personal stuff had happened," she explained. "Ironically enough, as bad as it was, that detention was the best thing that happened to me."

"Oh, I'm so sorry!" Dawn said, instantly contrite and reaching out to Isabel. "But why was having nightmares a good thing?"

Isabel smiled at the offered comfort. "It's bit of a long story, but I'll see if I can summarize it in a few points." After staring into the fire for a minute she began. "The week before, I'd had to go home to Roswell for a friend's funeral. At first we thought it was a car accident, but then we found out he'd been killed by someone we trusted. She was looking to betray us all. Then we almost went home. And by home, I mean out there," she said pointing at the sky. "Ultimately we didn't and I came back here. In the span of about four days, I was accused of being some sort of evil alien looking to take over the world and had the fact that I was an alien annouced over the radio to the whole school." Isabel looked over at Dawn and gave her a wry half smile. "To say I was a wreck? Doesn't begin to cover it. I was so far out on the River Denial, pretending everything was okay...Then I got detention. And had dreams, nightmares really, about my worst fears. The mostly involved the FBI taking me, or the people I care about being hurt or killed because of me. It was too much. I finally broke and wound up sobbing all over Angel. But once I did that, I was much better. So that's why I say detention was ultimately good for me. Because I don't know how long I would have gone on pretending to be okay when I really wasn't."

"Um, then, yay nightmares," Dawn smiled slightly. "You really sobbed all over Angel?" She asked, trying to picture that. "How'd he take it?"

"I did," she said, smiling softly at the memory. "He'd been in that detention as well. He never said what his nightmare was, but he came by to check on me and that's when I finally broke down. He hugged me, and then made me laugh."

"Awwwwww. Yeah, Angel's got a lot of nightmares to choose from, I bet."

"Big time awww... The big lug can be surprisingly sympathetic when it's needed." Isabel nodded, "He's told me some stuff about his past and his future. We've both decided that destiny sucks."

Dawn nodded, thinking of Buffy's grand destiny. "Yep."
