Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

The main campfire had been turned into a tropical paradise... without the tropics. There were leis and grass skirts to wear, tropical music playing, a buffet table, and the infamous Limbo Stick of Destiny, an artifact brought back to America from World War II. Noody knows what happens when a person wins a limbo competition involving the Limbo Stick of Destiny, but several experts on the subject suggest that "absolutely nothing happens except maybe you win a little trophy."

It was party time at the Fandom High Summer Camp.

[OOC: OCD is up. Yes, there is pig, poi, and sometimes the band will switch from generic tropical music to 60's beach movie music, or maybe reggae, or Raffi. They're unpredictable like that.

The luau takes place during a long break in the rain that

"Yeah," Tempe said smiling. "You're...Isabel, right?" She hoped, she really, really hoped.

"Yup, that' me. How are you doing? Enjoying your workshops" she asked cheerfully.

Tempe grinned. "Yes, especially Arts & Crafts. Where else could I go and play with glitter for an hour or two, and have it actually be worth something?"

"What about you?"

"Glitter is always fun," Isabel agreed. "I probably should have taken it but I went for workshops that were a bit more practical for me. They've all lots of fun. But there hasn't been any glitter involved."

"I went for the ones the administration signed me up for. And I'm really not sure that they could ever be seen as practical." Unless, of course, she had to defeat some monster of Justice, using only her wits and a vial of glitter...

"Have you learned anything useful?"

"You'd be surprised at what's considered practical around here." Isabel laughed, "I swear something is going to show up around here one day that can only be gotten rid of with liberal applications of glitter."

"I'm learning archery, first aid and karate. So it's all pretty practical stuff, especially here. For fun I took the beach workshop."

"Well, at least I'll be well-prepared for that," Tempe answered, also laughing. "My glitter skills are definitely improving."

"Cool. So you can defend yourself, shoot people with arrows and fix them afterward. That really is practical. Plus, you never know when all of that might take place on a beach. So you'd be really familiar with your environment."

"Exactly!" Isabel laughed. "Although we've only used suction cup tipped arrows so far. I'm not sure how much damage they'd actually do."

"The beach class has been fun so far. We've covered kayaking and canoeing. With plenty of time for sunning ourselves as well," she said. "I wish the rest of the years classes could be like this."

"Still," Tempe reasoned, "Those suction cups could leave a nasty mark if aimed at the right angle and velocity."

"You're lucky. Canoeing, kayaking, and sunning oneself are what summer is all about."

"Death by hickey," Isabel snickered. "That would be one hell of a way to go."

"I did get lucky. This is the first summer I'm spending near a beach. I intend to take advantage of it. It's so different then being home in the desert."

"Oh yeah," Tempe agreed. "So long as it was an actual hickey, and not just one caused by a suction cup. That takes all the fun out of it."

"You're from the desert?" Tempe asked, incredulously. "Cool."

"Roswell, New Mexico. Fandom is definitely a change. In more ways then one," Isabel said.

"Roswell," Tempe said. "The site of the supposed alien landing in 1947?"

She paused, thinking. "Which, for all I've experienced here, could actually have happened. So, are you an alien?"

Then, realizing that that probably wasn't a very nice thing to say, she corrected herself. "Oh! Not that being an alien would be a bad thing, or anything."

Tempe internally facepalmed.

"The site of the actual alien crash in 1947," Isabel corrected with a grin. "I was on board."

"Really?" Tempe asked, the amazement evident on her face. "That's awesome!"

Another internal facepalm.

"I'm sorry. It's just that this place never ceases to amaze me. Time travellers, people who use magic, and aliens. My brain is going a mile a minute trying to comprehend it all."

"Trust me, I understand. Even with my own unique background, my brain just about broke when I got here," Isabel assured her. "Fandom is pretty unique."

"Where are you from?"

"Just outside of Chicago, Illinois," Tempe answered. "Pretty normal little place. Plenty of museums close by."

"I've never been to Chicago, but it must be nice to have access to normal museums. The only thing we have in Roswell is the UFO museum." Isabel sighed, "It's the epitome of tacky."

"Very nice. I love going to museums. And though the UFO one must be interesting, you're right, normal is good."

[OOC: Absolutely.]

"I suppose," Isabel admitted. "Although if you saw that cheesy documentary Alien Autopsy, you've seen most of the museum. I'd much rather have a good art museum to go to. I really want to get up to DC one of these days and see the Smithsonian."

"The Smithsonian," Tempe said, slightly dreamily. "I love the Smithsonian. I'll drag you there myself, if I need to. No one should ever be deprived of that kind of goodness."

"I'm up for it one day. Maybe in the Fall. I was on Student Council in the Spring and arranged a trip to Baltimore," she explained. "If I manage to get elected again this Fall, I'll have to see about arranging a trip to DC."

"Cool," Tempe replied. "I'll see about fixing that election to make sure you get elected."

She grinned. "Kidding. But you know, the sentiment is there."

"You're going to be here in the Fall right? What year will you be?" Isabel asked.

"I sure hope so," Tempe replied. "After this, I just don't think I could go back to my old school and survive."

"I'll be a junior."
