Wilderness Survival - Week 2| Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto pointed to the box. "Put your shoes in there and take a handout."

"Knowing how to make fire is one of the most important wilderness survival skills possible. Without it, you can't keep warm, cook, or use it to keep predators away from your camp."

"For today's exercise you'll will be split into two groups, one group will start a fire using a bow drill, and the other with flint and steel. You don't get to go home until you have a fire."

Callisto waited until the students had split into their groups, before speaking again.

"Another useful survival skill is the ability to create tools from scratch, even more important is the ability to figure out how to make the best use of the tools available." Callisto held up a pointed stick. "If you want your shoes back, I want a different use for a pointy stick from each of you at the end of class."

"Yeah, but... How do we do this?" Buffy wondered. She reached out to poke the flint.

Sam smirked at Buffy. "We've got to strike the flint against the steel to try to get a spark. At least, I think that's how it goes. Dean's always been the pyromaniac, not me."

"Always wanted a big brother," Buffy said wistfully. "A really cool one with good looking friends."

"Do you want mine? I'm pretty sure Dean wouldn't mind," Sam teased.

Buffy grinned back. "Well, I know he's handsome, but does he have any good looking friends?"

Sam smiled, feeling especially brave. "With all the moving around we do, we don't get a chance to make many friends. So all Dean's really got is me."

"So that's a yes, huh?" Buffy arched her eyebrows at him, grinning.

"Yeah, I guess it is," Sam replied, matching the grin.

"So, that's a no to either of you knowing how to do this then?" Molly said with a smirk.

Buffy remembered that there were other people there as well. She shook her head. "Not a clue."

Sam coughed a little and shook his head. "Not particularly well, no. But I could try," he offered.

"I could hold the other hard thing if you need a hand," Buffy offered.

It would take a stronger person than Sam to not have at least a moment of brain-in-the-gutter at that statement. "Um, that's okay," he finally said. "I don't want to accidentally hurt you."

"I trust you," Buffy smiled. "And anyway I don't hurt easy. But if it's easier for you to do it yourself..."

"Doing it myself might be easier at the start." Sam gave the flint and the steel a few experimental hits. "Yeah, this is definitely going to suck."

Cameron was trying to pay attention, but it was kinda hard when the gnome kept tugging at his pants. Giving up on concentrating, Cameron looked down at him.

"What?" he asked and the gnome started making all sorts of gestures at him that didn't make any sense. "I really wish you could write or something."

Molly was covering her mouth with her hand to keep from giggling out loud.

"Who's you friend, Cam?" she asked then quickly bit her lips.

"I don't know, he won't tell me his name," Cameron said pointedly, raising an eyebrow at the gnome.

The gnome started making all sorts of agitated gestures at Cameron.

"I'm sorry, buddy. I have no clue what you're saying," Cameron sighed again.

"Too bad he doesn't know charades," Molly said. "A 'sounds like' clue could be helpful."

"It might be worth a shot?" Cameron turned his attention back to the gnome, but it had gotten bored and wandered up to Sam to watch what he was doing.

"Fandom is weird," Cameron decided.

Sam was a little too occupied with the tools to take much notice of Cameron's companion, until it came right up to him.

"Um, what is that and why is it staring at me?" he asked, watching as the gnome made more of the same gestures.

Molly snickered. "That is Cam's new friend. He is apparently trying to tell you something."

"Hey, just because you wake up with someone doesn't mean that they're your friend!" Cameron protested.

The gnome stopped mid-gesture and turned around, looking very wounded at Cameron.

"Oh Joseph," Cameron sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean that. We're friends. Great buddies. Seriously!"

The gnome perked right up and started bouncing up and down, while pointing at Sam.

Deciding that asking about how Cameron woke up with a gnome in his bed might not be healthy for his sanity, Sam chose to focus on the pointing and bouncing instead.

"Did I do something? Or not do something, maybe?"

Molly watched the gnome. "I think he wants Cam to try and start the fire? Maybe?" she said.
