Wilderness Survival - Week 2| Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto pointed to the box. "Put your shoes in there and take a handout."

"Knowing how to make fire is one of the most important wilderness survival skills possible. Without it, you can't keep warm, cook, or use it to keep predators away from your camp."

"For today's exercise you'll will be split into two groups, one group will start a fire using a bow drill, and the other with flint and steel. You don't get to go home until you have a fire."

Callisto waited until the students had split into their groups, before speaking again.

"Another useful survival skill is the ability to create tools from scratch, even more important is the ability to figure out how to make the best use of the tools available." Callisto held up a pointed stick. "If you want your shoes back, I want a different use for a pointy stick from each of you at the end of class."

"Maybe you should think about keeping him," Molly suggested and then started laughing again when it hugged Sam's leg.
likethegun: (i'm confused and wtf?)

"Yes, feel free to keep him, somewhere that's not attached to me," Sam said, giving his leg a little shake as he looked down at the gnome. "Thank you for lighting the fire though, that was very helpful."

Gnomes were apparently really good at clinging as it snuggled closer to Sam when he thanked him.

Cameron looked amused. "I think it likes you."

Molly frowned a little because that wasn't supposed to happen.

"Where did you find him anyway, Cam?" she asked completely innocently.

"It found me," Cameron grimaced. "Our cabin was full with these things. Good thing they're friendly."

"Huh. How weird," Molly said. "Yeah, cuddly gnomes are way better than ones that would eat you or make enough noise to wake the whole camp."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"I think that's the kind I'm more used to, the eating and noise-making sort." Sam gave his leg another shake, looking at the gnome like he was waiting for it to jump up and try to choke him. "Maybe you didn't show it enough friendliness in your cabin this morning."

Considering the gnome had been sleeping on his chest?

"I was more than friendly enough," Cameron said with a grimace. Noticing that Sam seemed to have some sort of gnome fear, he moved to pick up the gnome.

Sam gave Molly a mock glare. "Yeah, go ahead and laugh, you're not the one he's getting friendly with."

"Be glad he's not humping," he snorted as he detached the gnome from Sam's leg. It protested for a moment, but then climbed up Cameron's arm and settled on his shoulder.
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"I think I'll be eternally glad of that, thank you." Sam took a good look at the fire that had been made. "Do you think we'll be able to get away with that? I mean technically, the right tools were used."

"It was a good demonstration too," Molly pointed out.

The gnome looked rather pleased with himself and Cameron shrugged his other shoulder. "I won't tell if you guys don't?"

"I won't say a thing."

Molly mimed locking her lips and throwing away the key.

"Cool," Cameron turned towards the gnome. "You just keep a low profile, alright?" It nodded its head in agreement.

"I need to stop talking to it," Cameron mumbled to himself.

Buffy wandered back from where she'd gone to hide to avoid rolling on the ground laughing when Cam and gnome appeared. "Oh hey! Fire!" She gave Sam an admiring look.

Hamlet had just spent most of the fire lighting activity staring at the gnome hovering around Cameron. While the sudden appearance of a gnome probably shouldn't have been unusual in a place like Fandom, the way that it kept climbing to Cam did seem a bit odd. He had to admit, though, that the gnome was very good at getting a fire started.
