Karate, Gym, May 31, Wednesday Morning

"There are many fighting styles that have obtained their names from the way they seem to mimic the actions of certain animals," Tommy says, once the class has assembled. "One of these is the Stickbug." He demonstrates a series of moves, which seem to involve a lot of posing and holding still for moments at a time.

"Today, I'd like you guys to practice the Stickbug technique," Tommy instructs the class. "Either by yourself or find a partner to spar against."

[ooc: i'll be around sporadically till about 5pm pacific. after that, i'll be moving across town, so not so much.]

Phoebe looks around for a sparring partner as she does much better when she has someone to spar with.

Tyler nodded to the girl he had seen around. "Want to pair up?"

Phoebe nodded. "Sure, let's do that."

"Good," Tyler said, moving into fight stance. "I'm Tyler. A mightly Stickbug. So I should be a natural at this."

He managed not to giggle as he spoke.

"Ah," Phoebe said with a grin. "I didn't recognize you without the orange hair."

Tyler rolled his eyes a little. "It was a good look on me."

He imitated one of Dr. Oliver's poses in slow-motion. "Ready to start?"

"Phoebe." Phoebe was so totally not smirking. "Uh huh. I had never seen that colour orange on hair any where in nature."

She nodded and did one of Dr. Oliver's moves, sizing up Tyler.

"Blame Isabel," Tyler said, echoing the move.

"Ready to go?" Without waiting for an answer, he aimed a quick but soft stickbuggish kick at Phoebe's upper leg.

Phoebe smiled and moved to block the kick and then aimed one of the Stickbuggish arm movements to connect with his shoulder.

Tyler ducked low to dodge the shoulderblow, and then did a quick thrust with both arms to push Phoebe away.

Stickbuggishly.

Phoebe stumbled back and just barely managed not to land on her ass. She balanced and then kicked out with her foot like Dr. Oliver had shown them.

Tyler tried to dodge, but got tangled up in his own feet and fell to the mat. He launched an attack on Phoebe's knees, trying to take advantage of her moment off-balance.

Phoebe wasn't expecting that and went down on the mat, too.

She got to her feet and waited for him to get steady and then she shoved with her hands, straight out.

Tyler stumbled backwards, but managed to stay on his feet. He was laughing by now, launching into a defensive Stickbug pose.

Phoebe was also laughing which was probably not doing well for her attacks and parries.

Tyler was also not doing his best just then because of the laughing. He held up both arms in a Stickbug rest pose. "Call it a draw?"

Phoebe dropped to the mat in laughter and then held up both of her arms in the rest pose.

"I think we had better," she grinned.

Tyler held out a hand to help her up, wondering why he hadn't lost control the way he did when sparring with Peter. Maybe stickbug style was just too silly, or maybe sparring with a girl was too different. He'd have to remember that.

"Good spar," he said.

Phoebe took his hand and let him help her up.

"Thanks. This is definitely sillier than any sparring I've ever done before," she admitted.

"I have to agree," Tyler said. "See you around, Phoebe."

"Bye, Tyler."
