Philosophy of Food, 3rd period

The Danger Shop this week had been programmed in two halves - on one side, there was a formal dining room with fine china and silver. On the other, a neat blanket was spread out over grass, with a well-crafted wicker basket in the middle. The dishes there were sturdier and the silverware plainer.

Hannibal stood at a table between the two halves in a lovely summer suit.

He straightened up and nodded at the students. "This week, we're not talking about food; we're talking about how other things relate to food." He waved between the two halves of the classroom. "What sorts of food does each of these settings demand? What sorts of conversation and manners? What culture do you expect of each?"

He gestured at the table behind him, which held all the food. "Take some food, and sit where you like to eat it; move between the two, if you like. But think about this - when you choose your food and seat, is it only because of taste? Or is there a reason you prefer one over the other? What behavior do you feel is warranted in each place? What is most appropriate and most comfortable? Let us discuss it."

Ah. Well. Ignis might just be waiting a moment before offering his input on this one, either to hear what his fellow students had to say about it or until one in particular helpfully whispered in his ear what those distinctions he couldn't see were.

But in the meantime, he would listen, perhaps, for cues, or see if he could discern a little more from whatever types of food he could discern in the air.

Ignis nodded, grateful for the additional information, though his small smile accompanying it was just a touch strained. Because while Hannibal did possess a very pleasing voice and Ignis could not fault him the consideration, he had rather been hoping those details would be coming to him by way of the low and sultry whispers of one of his classmates.

(No. Not Gladio).

"Ah," he said with new understanding. "The distinction, then, reveals itself quite neatly. And I believe I can work my way through the offerings well enough from there, thank you, especially now with the proper framing."

Her perfume gave her away, of course. Any number of things, really - the swish of the silk of her gown, the tap of her footfalls in her boots, even the sound of her breathing and the way she displaced air. But it was likely her perfume that informed him first, followed by Liliana pressing herself against his back, then twined around him, her lips brushing against his ear. "I know you just told Hannibal you could go through the offerings yourself, but are you sure I can't convince you to let me describe them to you anyway? After all, I have quite the gifted tongue."

"I've had more than enough stuffy dining rooms growing up," Gladio stated with a faintly amused snort, needing no time to even consider it as he looked over the food options, looking mostly for meats conveniently on sticks, but he did pluck up a piece of fruit to toss into his mouth. "Besides..."

He grinned over at Iggy and gave a wink Nell's way.

"Everyone knows fresh air makes food taste better."

"Well," Ignis mused, with his faint smile growing slightly more as he considered the options, "context certainly does matter. I rather enjoy the more delicate and finer and often more rich and experimental fare that comes with a proper dinner setting, but there's something rather comfortable and corforting about eating outside for me, without all those trappings of formal etiquette. Being thus contented either way, I turn to the whims and mood of my company," and here he did turn to presumably eventually Liliana, with a gesture to invite her to lead the way, "to decide which to preference in this instances. Though I will be inclined to mention that it is very probable that our esteemed instructor has done us all the courtesy to skip coding mosquitoes into the simulation today."

"Different environments for different occasions," Liliana agreed, her arm sliding through Ignis'. "While neither of these are my actual favorite eating locations, I'm in the lazy, languid mood that suggests a picnic would be preferable."

"Fancy tables require fancy manners to my mind," Nell said, "and I have to say I don't feel like my plain manners would be quite up to snuff for me to both do as I should and enjoy the food the way it should be. A picnic is less formal and more comfortable for the likes of me, though I'll take some of the fancier food to try for sure."
