While most of Youtube was a horrible cesspit (much like the rest of the internet, really), there were still some wholesome and pure sections that one could visit to relax a bit. Carpet cleaning videos, for one. Powerwashing videos. Item restoration videos were also pretty great for that, and videos showing how.

Today, however, Arden was watching some guy dig out amazing open air buildings in the ground, by hand. She wasn't a hundred percent sure there wasn't some kind of trick at play here, but she also didn't care. Either way, it was a really compelling watch.

Or maybe she was just a nerd. Whatever.

Gray had decided that he really, really could not put it off any longer and needed to tell Alastair about the whole soulmate...situation. (How had he put it off this long? Listen, never go in against Sloth when procrastination was on the line. Especially when the task was 'breaking extremely horrible news to your big brother.') So he headed to the library in search of...he didn't know, emotional support? He felt like he should at least let Arden know, "Hey, so I'm going home this weekend...oh, what are you watching?" Was he grabbing on to any possible distraction from his upcoming conversation with Alastair with both hands? Yes. Yes, he was.

"Check out this guy digging himself a whole temple waterpark, basically!" Arden said, enthusiastically, turning her laptop so he could see. "I'm pretty sure it's bullshit somehow? But it's cool and entertaining bullshit."

This guy was the anti-Sloth, it was crazy. Even Arden was getting tired watching him dig.

"...but why?" asked the avatar of Sloth. That looked like a lot of effort being gone to on that there laptop screen.

Cool effort, but still.

"Because he can, I think," Arden said. "A way to flex, maybe? And, of course, good content and views."

"Oh, of course," Gray agreed, because he knew a bit about that influencer life from sometimes staring blankly at a screen for hours on end, as one did. "And it looks like it'll be really cool when it's finished." But effort.

"Sooooo if Ray asks, you have no idea why I went home this weekend without telling him."

That was a hell of an interesting transition. Arden held up a finger to pause Grey, took out a nipper bottle of rum, and tossed it to the lurking squirrel. "Fuck off Jimothy," she said, before turning to Grey. "So why are you going home this weekend without him?"

And did he need backup?

Gray ran a hand through his hair, making it even more of a mess than it was already. "I can't really put off talking to Alastair any longer. Believe me. I've tried. But...he needs to know. And if Raiden's not there that's one less person who might accidentally hear something from his brain before he gets it locked down."

A beat.

"Also Cas and Bellamy are out of town this weekend. Something about an auction. Bells is so much braver than me."

"That's gonna be a bloodbath, and I'm only 73% sure I'm speaking metaphorically," Arden said. "Maybe Bellamy will record it for me, so I can watch from the safety of my room."

A much safer topic than, y'know. The other one.

"...Do you have a plan?"

"That might be why he's going," Gray mused. It wasn't like he stood much chance of making Greed see reason, but, "Also hopefully he can talk him out of buying anything too ugly. Or straight up stealing a painting." Jokes! Or were they?

He shrugged and admitted, "I don't know, not really? Get him somewhere alone, obviously. A lot depends on Sloth not deciding to screw me. If I sleep through 73% of the weekend that's a problem." Was a small part of him hoping to sleep through 73% of the weekend and kick the can further down the road? Yes.

Arden sincerely doubted they were jokes.

"...How many paintings has he stolen that that is a concern?"

Important to check these things!

"Also, umm. How's...Joseph?...doing?"

"None that are still in the statute of limitations?" That totally made it okay, right? "Also Al usually makes him give them back.

"Uh, I don't really...know? I haven't asked lately." Translation: scared to find out.

"So...many, check," Arden said, snickering.

"Maybe...maybe, you wanna check before telling him?" Arden said. "Like, if he's, you know, not doing great? This might not be the best time?"

Look, Grey! It's another potential delay!

Gray knew you would be a helper, Arden!

"You think?" he asked hopefully. "I mean--not that I want Joseph to be not doing great!" That would be one step closer to Alastair being...available, and one step closer to Gray snapping and stabbing an angel in the face, if he didn't find a better solution.

"No, of course you don't," Arden soothed. "I'm just saying, maybe you should ask about him first? Or find out somehow? And maybe ask if Al is in a place--"

She paused. Remembered which brother this was.

"Right, there's no way he'd say no. Hmm. Well, you know. Best judgment."

Alastair? Admit he wasn't doing just peachy? Weirder things had happened, but Gray couldn't remember when. Luckily, Gray had been his brother for several centuries now and could evaluate accordingly. "There are definitely signs when he's not doing great. Like, he might have a hair out of place."

"His clothing not being perfectly and pristinely pressed?" Arden suggested.

Look, Alastair wasn't the only one who seemed like he needed a bit of a pick-me-up.

"Whoa, whoa," Gray said, complete with 'whoa' hands. "It's not the apocalypse or anything."

Yet.

Arden laughed. "Sorry, sorry, good point. Maybe his shoes won't be polished to a mirror-shine?"

"Oh, yeah, you gotta check the shoes," Gray agreed. "Also the fact that he let Castor go to an auction, even with supervision, is..." Gray searched for the right word. "Ominous?"

It would be fiiiiiiine.

"Are the books behaving themselves?" She wasn't still mad at him for encouraging them to unionize on behalf of snakes everywhere, was she?

"They have been," Arden said, eyeing him. "The unionization talk didn't last long."

She was mostly mad at you for making her be anti-union, Grey. That was hurtful.

"Is there anything I can do?" she asked. "To help make it easier for you? Or to help you recover when you get back?"

Solidarity forever, Arden. Solidarity forever.

Gray shrugged and picked at the drawstring on his hoodie. "I dunno. I don't know how this is gonna...I don't know how Al's gonna take it. Besides 'probably not well.' But he needs to know. It's not fair for him not to know."

Maybe he would stab Lazarus and spare Gray having to?
