Fandom Library, Wednesday, January 8th

The temperature was cold enough that even Arden's ability to regulate the temperature of the air around her wasn't up to the task. What was worse? Something (Arden was betting gremlins) had broken (or sabotaged) the library's heat. As in, there wasn't any.

She'd put in an emergency work request for Fosse, but until then, your friendly neighborhood aide would be huddled behind the circulation desk, wrapped in the blanket she kept handy for Gray's Sloth attacks, and looking very miserable about the whole thing.

Probably about how cold it is.

Kamala's typical beverage of choice will always and ever be a Red Squishy. But in the middle of the winter a peppermint hot mocha is a valid substitute. Which is why there were two very large cups in her hands right now as she entered. She opened her mouth to greet Arden and then paused as she felt the temperature in the lobby.

"Hey, is it me or is it colder in here than it is outside?" Kamala asked with a slight shiver as she walked into the room.

"I think it might be," Arden said, clutching her blanket tighter. "If it gets any colder in here, it might start snowing." She eyed the drinks in Kamala's hands. "Please tell me those are warm?"

"They were when I came in, here take both," Kamala offered. "Do you want me to run back to the house and get you something warm?"

Arden opened the blanket and unzipped her winter jacket to show off her thick sweater. "I don't think I have anything warmer," she admitted, grabbing one of the drinks with a grateful smile. "This is plenty to get me from Midnight to school and back! I don't think I've ever spent more than an hour or so out in the cold."

People did this all the time? For fun?

"Here, take my hat," Kamala said taking off her fuzzy hat with the ear flaps. "It's super toasty and 90% of heat loss is because you don't wear a hat."

A better friend would insist that Kamala should keep her hat, especially for the walk home, but Arden was still learning friendship and was therefore reaching for the hat to cram it down over her curls as fast as she could.

"I'm not sure how it's this cold," she said. "I'm starting to think that not only is the heat broken, the AC is busted on. Thank you, Kams, I love you."

Gray paused just inside the library door and pronounced, "Oh. Oh, I don't like this." Too cold!

"I'm like two seconds away from building an igloo!" Arden declared.

Don't fall asleep in the library, Gray. Arden was hogging your blanket.

"It's so cold," Gray complained. Okay, whined. "It can't be good for the books." See how considerate he was, thinking of the books? Totally the books.

Definitely worried about the books. Cold must be bad for all that...paper. Or whatever.

"It can't be good for me," Arden whined back. "Usually I'm not cold! Do you know how extra cold it has to be for me to be cold?"

The glue! It had to be bad for the glue...right?

"...no," Gray admitted. "You don't get cold? Jealous. I hate being cold." Most people did, Gray.

"It takes a lot to get me cold," Arden said. "Or hot, really. I'm pretty comfortable up through the 80s and down through the 30s. It's like a, ah, genetic thing."

A benefit of being an air elemental! Innate heating and cooling of the air around you!

"Lucky," Gray, who was sturdier than your average human himself, said. "I like it when it's warm," he complained. "And sunny. Echo Bay is bad enough, and it mostly rains there. Not snow. Bleh."

It was a good thing Gray had never been to Narnia, because 'always winter and never Christmas' would truly have been his hell.

Sounds like the kind of place Lazarus would enjoy: misery forever.

"I also like it when it's warm," Arden agreed. "North Carolina gets snow sometimes around now, and sometimes even pretty bad, but I never have to be outside for it!"

Lazarus was apparently allergic to shirts, so--actually, yes, let him freeze his tits off.

"It's supposed to be warm inside," Gray agreed. "If it has to be cold outside we should be warm. With hot chocolate." He realized, "Ooh, I should have brought hot chocolate. If I'd known it was cold in here I totally would have done that."

"Kamala brought me a peppermint mocha and I'm pretty sure I blessed her house until the ninth generation or something," Arden said. "Just having it in my hands was nice." She shook her head. "If it's like this next week, I'm just leaving."

"Oooh, a peppermint mocha," Gray said. "Those almost make coffee drinkable." Because you couldn't taste the coffee. "And I like that idea. Where will you go? I hear Bora Bora is very nice this time of year."

The only way Arden could be convinced to drink coffee, it was true. And even then, she'd mostly sipped and used it to warm her hands.

Arden laughed. "Oh, I meant just leaving the library!" she said. "I can't just pop off to the tropics midweek!"

She paused. "Well, okay, I guess maybe to spend a few hours at a beach I could? But wouldn't that make coming home even worse?"

Gray thought about it. "You're probably right," he agreed. "Imagine tearing yourself away from a nice sunny beach so soon. Yuck."

"Especially to come back to winter," Arden groaned. "Here in Arctic fuckin' tundra." She shivered again and wrapped her blanket further around her. "What's on your class schedule this semester?"

"I'm taking the paleontology class, even though I think I already took it once," Gray confessed. "Don't tell the teachers. But dinosaurs are cool, so." He shrugged. "And that friendship class, and one on relaxing...I figure I should ace that one," he joked. "Oh, and the one about being efficient, which I don't think is actually going to be about being efficient." Call it a hunch. "What about you?"

"You'll be able to efficiently watch movies, especially the lady heist one," Arden snickered. "I'm taking Earth Cultures, because I enjoy traveling with Professor Lana, the class about different photographers, the community projects class, and cupcake wars. So a pretty easy semester, probably."

"You like photography?" Gray asked. "I don't think I knew that. That's cool. I've heard things about cupcake wars, though. I think there was something about shrimp? So, uh. I don't know. Be brave? Or...don't put shrimp in a cupcake? Probably that second one." A beat. "And if you do, don't tell Ray about it. He might cry. Or eat it, and I'm not sure which is worse."

"Oh, don't worry," Arden said. "I have no intention of participating in any food war crimes. I'm hoping that since Professor Smith is teaching a different class, it won't be so crazy. Because ew."

Perhaps he's doing something magic about the problem?
