Arts & Crafts Workshop #1, Dining Hall, 05.22.06, Afternoon

[OOC: Getting this out of the way before sleep, yays. Interaction will be light from me due to work, but if you ping me in the Talk To Tick thread, I'll get to you ASAP.

Get in the threads, get talking to one another (project threads are intended primarily for student interaction, of course), and make some art! And crafts! Workshop info post will be written after work.]

As per a handwavey bulletin in the main camp activities area, The Tick's Arts & Crafts workshop met in the dining hall/activity area after lunchtime.

"Hello, campers!" Tick said when everyone was in a seat. "In case you don't know me, I am The Tick! Feel free to call me Professor, Tick, sir, or something else you feel would be appropriate to call your instructor."

"Throughout the session, you'll be working on two things. Every week, we'll be working on some kind of activity. These will be smaller projects. Today, for example, I'd like you to take some popsicle sticks and some sort of adhesive - we have glue, wood glue, rubber cement, duct tape, and a couple staplers - and make something that makes you think of Justice. It can be anything as long as it means Justice to you!"

"Additionally, every week, you'll be working on a long-term project. We will be making scrapbooks! Yes, campers! We're scrapbooking. Everyone here will working on their own scrapbooks, but if you need help for some reason, ask someone else to lend a hand! These scrapbooks will be detailing your time here this summer. Your thoughts, your impressions, your feelings. And hopefully, if everyone puts a good amount of work into their scrapbooks, we can all have some fun with it! At the end of the session, we'll take a look at everyone's scrapbooks, of course, and the person with the best scrapbook might just win a special prize! All of your scrapbooking supplies are on this side of the table. Feel free to mod take whatever you might need!"

"Let's get to work, chums!"

Jaye is making a popsicle stick judge. Or something. It's starting to look like the stick thingies from that movie about the kids lost in the woods with the witch, but it's entirely unintentional.

Keen indeed...

Seras futzed with the popsicle sticks and various adhesives for a few moments before she set about making a popscicle stick jail cell.

Bridge is, perhaps not surprisingly, making little popsicle-stick people. And painting them different colours.

Justice Sticks. Popsicle Justice. Oh, Lord.

Feeling ambitious, Sakura grabs a handful of sticks and two types of glue -- she didn't read the labels real carefully -- and sets to fidgeting. She doesn't have anything specific in mind, but what she's coming up with looks sort of like a person wearing a grass skirt made of broken popsicle sticks. She looks like she's really concentrating on creating this... whatever it is.

Kaylee doesn't much trust law enforcement types where she's from, so she decides to make an Alliance officer. Then she mangles it a bit and grins. This means justice to her.

Tempe picked up some popsicle sticks and some wood glue (and a small bottle of blue glitter, which she had found sitting among the scrapbooking supplies).

She walked over to a table, sat down and got to work, cutting and gluing together the popsicle sticks.

Once it was all put together, and she'd duct-taped it for good measure (and sprinkled it with a liberal pinch of glitter), she had herself a gavel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavel). Of Justice. Not that she called it that or anything.

Hamlet grabbed a handful of popsicle sticks and started gluing them on top of each other in a big clump. It may have started to look something like a dagger, the more he stuck on top.

Make something out of popsicles sticks and (as Sakurazaki chooses) duct tape, eh? That reminds her of Justice?

It's a pretty massive goal, but she decides to try to replicate her nodachi. This is going to take a lot of popsicles sticks and duct tape.....

Maybe she'll just make a mini-nodachi. A mini Yuunage for a Mini Setsuna, perhaps.

Luna took some sticks and some glue, and began to fashion a chair, a seat of Justice.

Maia made a popsicle stick gallows. Taking a little piece of string she fashioned a noose and let it hang from the top of the gallows. "I present the wrong end of justice." Maia said with a nod, she wasn't in favor of the death penalty.

Jaye is staying in Seahorse. This may be why she can't stop giggling.

Scrapbooking, eh? This, Sakura could work with. She knew there was a good reason she'd brought a camera with her... Were pictures allowed in scrapbooks?

Scrapbooking? That's exactly the type of activity Kaylee really enjoys. So she gets started right away.

Re: Scrapbooking [WS1]

Tempe set to work on her scrapbook. She already had a pretty snazzy-looking cover and backing for the book. She then picked up several sheets of coloured paper to put between the covers. And then some extra, in case she ran out of space with the stuff she had.

She poked holes through the paper and covers and then bound them all together with some sturdy-looking gold ribbon.

By the time she was done (and man, had she worked fast), she had a suitable beginning. Now that she had a structure, she could concentrate on getting the stuff to put in the scrapbook.

She sat back in her chair and admired the results, running her hand through her hair. Her very glittery hand.

Sakurazaki doesn't know any thing about scrapbooking. She doesn't even understand what the word means. Really. So she just sort of hoovers around, hoping people don't mind her looking over their shoulders as she watches to see what it's all about.

Scrapbooking wasn't the same as revising or making hats. In fact, she might be too young for scrapbooking, it does sound like an activity meant for ones older. Sort of like shuffleboard, without all the pucks and sticks.

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia looked at the scrapbook supplies and found some little fuzzballs and google eyes. Being very careful she cut one side of the grey fuzzballs so they would lay flat on the cover of her scrapbook, she pasted on the google eyes and stuck a bit of black leather on the face. In it's most primative form, she had made a 3-D cover for her scrapebook complete with a Koala bear on a tree branch.

Her popscicle stick jail cell now ready to house any miscreant mice or bugs, Seras apporoaced her...interesting new teacher.

"Er...Mr.Tick? Sir?"

"Professor The Tick? I must confess, I have little experience with scrapbooking, and may need some help getting started. My Mother did a lot of scrapbooking, but never taught me her techniques. Does one scrapbook alone or with a partner or two? Do you require any special items to do it? Should you prepare in advance or just go straight to it?"

Re: Display Your Project [WS1]

Tempe's project was a gavel of Justice made out of popsicle sticks, wood glue, duct tape, and a smattering of artful blue glitter. It's actually quite a nice-looking thing. Just don't bang it too hard on the table.
