Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Hermione recognizes the voice, and looks up, and gapes.

"Hello." Cedric smiles and walks over. "You look surprised to see me."

"I... I, um. You're here," she says, and is still gaping a bit.

"Yes," he confirms. "I arrived by portkey a few hours ago. Is it such a surprise to see me here?"

She isn't exactly sure of the best way to answer that, since he seems to think this is perfectly normal. She doesn't answer, instead asking, "How?"

"Portkey," he repeats. "A battered old suitcase instead of an old shoe. Dumbledore ordered me here immediately."

"Dumbledore knows you're here?" she says, immediately writing the letter in her head.

"Yes. He's the one who sent me here," Cedric tells her.

"Oh." She pauses. "Hello."

"Hello." He laughs again. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"No, of course, I'm all right," she assures him. "It's just really good to see you." Alive, yes.

"You too," Cedric answers. "I've seen Draco and was worried he'd be the only familiar face here. How did you end up here? Dumbledore's orders?"

She is quickly deciding that there is no good way to say They didn't want me at a school where students died because she could foresee the next question. "My parents decided that I would be better off in a different setting."

"Hogwarts didn't suit them?" Cedric asks.

"I can't see you leaving Hogwarts, Hermione," Cedric points out. "You were the smartest student there."

Hermione sighs a little. "Maybe I'll do as well here," she says, but sounds pretty confident about it.

"You never were short of confidence," Cedric grins. "Don't you miss Hogwarts though? I already do."

"I don't either," Cedric agrees. "Everything is different. I feel like an outsider."

There's a comment there that Hermione isn't going to make. "You'll adjust," she assures him. "After all, there are plenty of other new people."

"With our backgrounds?" he says, quirking an eyebrow.
