Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

[OOC: All right folks, have at it!]

"Greetings, Lady Gwynn of Locksley. Where did you travel from to get here?"

Feeling for the sword that wasn't at his side, Peter asked "are you feeling rather undressed without your weapons as well? I saw you giving them up to the Principal earlier. I understand the principle behind the idea, but it's going to be difficult to get used to."

Gwynn smiled. "I come from Sherwood Forest in Briton."

She nodded at his question.

"In service to the king I have never been without my arms, so yes, it is going to be very difficult to get used to."

"I'm from Britain as well - though I've not been back in quite a while. It's wonderful to meet a countrywoman!"

"Your king must be honored to have you in his service. I know I have many fine warriors, but my sister with her arrows can beat them all." Peter blinked like he hadn't meant to say that and continued. "I'm feeling the same way. The Principal was kind enough to allow me my shield, and I've been told that we may have them back in an emergency - but doesn't the very definition of an emergency preclude standing in line for weapons?"

Gwynn was feeling a little bit better now that she had met someone else from back home---someone that seemed close to her time period, as well.

"King Phillip made me swear myself to his service as long as I am able. Must have something to with having raided the tower with him so he could stop Prince John from stealing his throne." Gwynn blinked, because she knew she hadn't planned telling him that. "You're sister is an archer? Does she enjoy it? I've never met another woman good with a bow."

She thought about this. "You make a good point, Sir Peter. If there is an emergency, why would we be expected to stand in line for weapons?"

"Raiding the tower? Now that's a story I need to hear sometime! Were you rescuing a person? Or the crown jewels? Or King Phillip himself?"

Peter smiled at the thought of his sister and congratulated himself on covering his slip. "Su is fabulous with her bow. She very much loves it or I can't imagine a single reason why she'd be practicing for hours every single day. Even when we travel, she insists on getting some time in before we start out in the morning. She began excusing herself from local tournaments a year ago because she took away all the prizes."

"Do you use a sword as well? We must work at them together if you do - neither of us can fall out of practice while we're here, deal?" Peter extended his hand for shaking.

"I'd hope they have more sense than that, but perhaps... I've heard there are those here who can use magic so perhaps they keep the attackers away while we warriors find our weapons?"

"We were rescuing my father and Will Scarlett so we could stop Prince John." She smiled. "If you're really interested I can tell you the entire story sometime, but you don't have to be polite and listen if you don't wish to."

Gwynn's eyes were shining with happiness. "I hope to meet your sister sometime. She sounds like a wonderful woman."

"Yes, I have been trained to use a sword. I had to turn that in as well." She shook his hand. "Deal. We will definitely work at them together while we're here. You're wise in that we must not fall out of practice." She thought for a moment. "If there are sorcerors here then it would make sense that they would be our shield so we could retrieve our weapons."

Peter gave Gwynn a Look. Which might be similar to the Look of any King when he wants to say 'do you think so little of me?' without actually saying it. "I wouldn't ask, Gwynn, if I weren't interested."

"Both my sisters are wonderful women though Lucy's quite a bit younger than you, I think. I hope you may meet them eventually."

Peter grinned as they shook hands. "I'm pretty sure there are others who might work at swordplay as well - I saw one girl in what could possibly have been a practice tunic and breeches. But we must definitely keep up our standards so we shan't be embarrassed when we go home."

Gwynn found herself smiling broadly. "My King often gives me looks such as that one, Sir Peter. You must have spent a great deal of time in Court."

It's pretty obvious that Gwynn is a little more comfortable now than she was when her carriage first dropped her off here. Finding a friend who understood probably had a lot to do with that.

"Then when we are settled in at some point, I will tell you the entire story," she promised. "I do hope I get to meet your sisters as they sound like sensible and fascinating women." She cocked her head. "Do you use any other weapon besides the sword?"

Peter shrugged. "Such things happen, don't they. Whether we like them or not! But yes, a bit, since I was twelve or so, at least. It seems so very far away compared with here, doesn't it?"

Noticing Gwynn's comfort level increasing, Peter smiled to himself. Sometimes a familiar person and topic helped immeasurabley - as he certainly knew. "I look forward to the tales of your exploits, Lady Gwynn. Though really, if we're to be friends and sparring partners, you must just call me Peter or Pevensie."

"I can shoot a bow, but I'm not particularly good with it - to Su's eternal delight! And I'm sure you've felt the same way in the past." Peter shot Gwynn a wicked look and a wink. "Other than that, I've learned a little bit of knife fighting and hand to hand. And jousting, of couse, but that's more a sport than a weapon, eh? What about you? You have your bow and your sword? Do you employ other weapons at the service of your king?"

Gwynn nodded in agreement. "Yes, the Court does seem so very far away in comparison."

She smiled.

"Then, Peter, you must call me Gwynn. And yes, there have been times that I have taken great delight in the realization that I am much better with a bow than several of the men I know back home. Of course, unless provoked, I would never think of telling them that as it would be rude to do so. I also know how to fight with a knife and hand to hand as sometimes the close proximity of battle does not allow for a sword or a bow."

"We shall definitely have to practice together, Gwynn. Often. How did you come by such training at your home? You said you didn't know any other women archers - are there other women fighters in your King's Court?"
