Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Nice to meet you too." Tim smiled. "Sticking around for the summer? Or just taking advantage of the free food before you high tail it for home?"

"Oh, I'm sticking around for the summer," Lana said with a smile. "I figure at least we'll be safe from snow monster attacks then. Zombie attacks... well... we'll have to see how it goes."

*blinks* Hobson wasn't kidding. "So, that kinda stuff happen often?" he asked, wondering how quickly a not quite athletic guy could get to the weapons locker in a pinch.

"So far, we've only had really big craziness once a -" Lana hesitated, "No... that's not quite true."

She shrugged, "I guess that would depend on your definition of often. Fandom can be a pretty crazy place. But I have to say, I've been a heck of a lot safer here than I was at home, so I can't really complain, you know?"

"Well, you're in the right place, then," Lana said laughing. "Me, I'm from a little town called Smallville, Kansas. How about you?"

Smallville Kansas? "The founders of your town weren't very ambitious were they?" *Shut up you fool!* "Uh, no offense meant of course. I'm from the big city. New York, New York."

Lana laughed. "Not ambitious and with no imagination," she agreed.

"New York City? I've always wanted to go there." she said a little wistfully. "See a show, shop, see 5th Avenue..."

"It loses some of it's charm when you live there." Tim said. "But it's never boring." Even before it became the home to the returning Fae. "I wouldn't think a small town in Kansas would be very crazy though. New York's kinda known for it."

"Do you have many meteor mutants in New York?" Lana asked with a grin. "They're what make life in Smallville... interesting... at times."

What the hell, sounded like she was the type who'd be open to the possibilities. "No, no meteor mutants. Although I'm not certain the stories of mutants in the sewers is just an Urban Myth. We have recently gotten an influx of Domestic Spirits. Banshees, Hobgoblins, that sort of thing."

Lana blinked. "Banshees and..." she shook her head. "If it's not one thing it's another... Well, I don't think we've had any of those here as yet. Zombies, demons, vampires, witches, gremlins... Those we have."

"Are those students?" he possibly joked. Inwardly he frowned. The hole in the leeside might be too small for monsters, but was it possible for them to escape from the leeside into here? And if so, they could go anywhere couldn't they? Maybe Lord Palamon had more than one reason to send him here.

She thought for a second. "Um... demons, witches, vampires, yes. Zombies, gremlins - and did I mention snow monsters? - no."

He snickered a bit. "Snow monsters?" his grin widened. "As my good friend the Luchorpan would say, are you full of Blarney?"

Lana raised her eyebrows, "Do I look like someone who would make this sort of stuff up?"

She shook her head and smiled, "But yeah, it sounds pretty unbelievable, I know. And honestly, you'll see for yourself soon enough."

"I've been the new kid at school before." Tim shrugged. "I know all about scaring the newbies. Of course, normally that comes in the form of swirlies and nuklear wedgies," he winced, remembering a doozy that pre-Fae invasion Neil gave to him. "But if you say it happened, I've seen way too much weirdness myself to completely not believe it."

"So what made you jump from one frying pan into another?"

"I wanted to get away from home. Get out from under all their expectations of me. All I was ever going to be there was the little fairy princess who saw her parents killed in front of her." Lana's face seemed shuttered. "I wanted to be somewhere where I could be... me."

She sighed. "I had no idea Fandom was going to be as crazy as home. Though, honestly, I've been safer here than I ever was there."

"Your parents..." A vague repressed memory tried to worm it's way up. *Remember Tim, what is freely given for love can never be regretted* He swallowed it down. "I'm sorry." he said lamely.

"You're not really a Faery Princess are you?" he asked sincerely.

Lana nodded. "Thanks. It was a long time ago, but it never really goes away."

"And no, not a real fairy princess, obviously," she shook her head ruefully. "I just happened to be dressed up as one when it happened and that seems to be the image permanently seared on everyone's brain."

A slow smile spread over Lana's face. "The place is definitely good. That's why I keep resisting all my guardian's efforts to bring me back home. This feels more like home to me now. You'll get used to it quickly enough. And if there's anything I can do to help, feel free to give a call or stop in. I'm in room 403."
