Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

[OOC: All right folks, have at it!]

"My favorite teacher from my last school got a job here. I've sorta been keeping in touch with him in email, but I found out about the summer camp part on my own. Sounded like a good idea, so here I am. Plus I gotta take my senior year over, so I'm hoping I can stick around for fall." Conner shrugged. "My hometown sort of . . . got a little weird over the past year."

"You're doing your senior year at a new school?" Marie asked. "That must be hard, leaving your friends behind. And who's the teacher you know? Is he nice? What does he teach?"

Conner smiled a little wistfully. "We were sort of going our separate ways anyway. Trent and Ethan were going off to college and Kira's trying to move to New York and get a music career going. Plus that stuff that got weird back home made it hard to sort of go back to a normal boring life when it was all over."

He readjusted his grip on the suitcases and looked over at Marie. "Doctor Oliver used to be my science teacher back at Reefside High. I think that's what he still teaches, but he might've mentioned something about driver's ed too. He's a great guy. Taught me a lot."

"Well, everyone I've met here so far seems really friendly," Marie said with a smile. "So you shouldn't have trouble making new friends."

Marie double checked her paperwork as they headed up the stairs. "And I think I'm too young to take driver's ed, but I'll definitely look for one of Dr. Oliver's classes."

Conner laughed. "I'm more worried about finding people I can play soccer with, 'cause you're right. Everybody seems friendly. Speaking of which, what do you do for fun?"

"Back home I mostly just spent time with my friends and family," Marie said. "I took piano and ballet lessons. Sadly, I don't know how to play soccer because proper ladies don't sweat."

Conner's jaw dropped at that -- partly because he couldn't believe she'd just said that, and partly because he was stunned to realize that a year ago he might have told her the same thing. Just a year ago? Whoa.

"Aw, I didn't mean to make it sound like I was hoping you would, necessarily," he said quickly. "But if I'm gonna teach kids how to play soccer someday, I guess it's not too early to start learning how to teach, huh? If you want to, I mean."

"My mother would be positively scandalized," Marie said with a grin. "So that would be fun! After all, I'm here for a unique educational experience."

"Is that what the brochure said?" asked Conner. "Aha! Fifth floor. Here we are," he announced, and set the bags down outside her door. He needed a breather, though he wouldn't admit it.

"And hey," he added, "I'll be more than happy to teach you to play, if you really want."

"I think that would be fun," Marie said. "And thank you so much for helping me carry my bags. You must be a real southern gentleman."

Conner blinked at that, because although he might have grown a lot since that crazy field trip detention with Doctor Oliver last fall, he was always going to be just a little bit of a dumb jock at heart.

"What? Nope, Reefside, California born and raised. But it was no problem, I swear!"

Marie grinned. "Well, Conner, it was very nice meeting you. I'm sure we'll be seeing each other around."

Conner gave her a thumbs-up and started backing down the hallway. "You betcha. Have fun settling in!"
