Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

"No, I've been here since September," Cameron replied.

"The lookalike thing is weird at first, but she's not around so you don't have to actually deal with it. There's a guy around here who looks exactly like me, he's just a bit pudgier."

Marie raised her eyebrows. She was starting to get the idea that this place was a little strange, but lookalikes?

"Well, I guess it's good that she's not here then. Hopefully I can clear up any confusion and be good to go."

She tilted her head. "Since September? Got any advice for a newbie?"

"People are used to it by now, John and I aren't the only doppelgangers around," he assured her.

"Let's see," he considered it for a moment. "Be careful of the cafeteria food as it sometimes has strange side effects. If you run into small green creatures, try not to get bitten because again, weird side effects. We haven't had any gremlins around in a while. And then there are the monster invasions, but that's kinda hard to prepare yourself for."

Marie blinked. Several times, in fact.

"When you say strange side effects, you don't mean rashes or swelling or something, do you?" she asked finally. "And I'm not sure if I want to know what you mean by monster invasions."

"No, more like you can start randomly singing ABBA. Or you think you're someone who you really around. I think it was Anakin who thought he was a vampire slayer. Rory seemed to think she was three years old. Stuff like that," he tried to smile reassuringly.

"Sorry, don't mean to scare you. Most things just seem to wear off after a few hours. The monster invasions, that's a different matter."

"Okay, singing I can handle. But what is a vampire slayer?"

"Uh, someone who kills vampires. We used to have one in the school, but she left a while ago," he explained. "We used to have a few vampires on the island, but most seem to be gone now."

More blinking.

"You mean there are people here who think vampires are real?" Marie asked skeptically.

"They're real," he said. "Trust me, I got more up close and personal with them than I would have liked."

"Have you been eating cafeteria food?" Marie asked, wondering if this boy was on drugs or something.

Cameron chuckled. "No, but apparently they've already warned you about that one. I know it all sounds pretty incredible, Fandom is just weird. Not always in a bad way either. I never thought I'd actually have aliens as my best friends."

"You just warned me about it," Marie reminded him. "And I'm guessing by alien you mean from outer space not in this country illegally?"

"D'oh, sorry. Already have the cafeteria food conversation with someone else," he rubbed his forehead. "Old age. Yeah, aliens as from way out there. Pretty cool. Some just look exactly like us."

"That's weird," Marie said. "And I feel like a broken record. But none of that was in the brochure."

Cameron grinned. "I know, I think they make a parent safe version. There's no way my folks would have allowed me to come here if they knew."

"Is it safe here?" Marie wondered.

That was a trick question, but Cameron didn't want to complete scare the new girl. "Yeah, it's safe. We've got excellent security which comes with a Mountie hat."

"Mountie? You mean, like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police?" Marie perked up.

"I've read a lot about them. I'm hoping to travel across Canada to Alaska some day."

"Counstable Fraser is a Mountie," Cameron nodded and smiled. "Sick of the heat? You're from the South, right?" He asked, basing himself on her accent.

"A little," Marie admitted. 'And, yes, I'm from Mississippi. But it's more because Alaska has always seemed so exotic to me."

She looked down. "You probably think that's silly though."

"No," he shook his head, still smiling. "It's something different from the South. It doesn't have belly dancers, but I think I can see what you mean."

Marie smiled. "Well, it was nice meeting you, Cameron. Thanks for all the good advice, but now I think I'm going to try to get to my room. I'll see you around!"

"Sure," he nodded. "Have fun and if you need a hand with something you can usually find me on the 2nd floor. I'm in room 223."

"I'll try to remember that!"
