Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Peter attempted to suppress his curiosity then gave in.

"And what is that?" he asked, pointed at the skateboard.

"Yeah, bro, just got here," Jude replied mellowly before straightening and holding up the skateboard. "This, British-dude, is a skateboard. Not merely a set of wheels on which to ride, but a way of life."

"A way of life?" Peter looked confused. "You mean, it transports you and, err, gives meaning to who you are? How does it do that?"

"The skateboard embodies the way of the skater," Jude explained in his slow, mellow drawl. "Which is to be at one with the chaos and noise of the mall in the search for the most extreme trick. It is calm and knowing acceptance of your own inner cool."

If Jude were any more zen, he'd be in a coma.

Peter blinked. Zen and children who grew up during the Depression? So did not make sense. "I see...maybe you could show me a 'trick' sometime?"

"Sure, bro. The stairs in the dorms should be good if I don't have an elevator . . ." Jude was already planning something involving that pond they had driven past.
