Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Are you from this area?" Ellie asked. "I've spent a lot of time in DC but I've never been to Fandom."

"I'm originally from Connecticut, but yeah, then we moved to DC," Elizabeth nodded. "It's a great city. I'm hoping to go back for a weekend this summer with friends." She nodded. "I didn't even know Fandom existed until I ended up at school here."

"Neither did I," Ellie admitted. "How did you end up here then?"

Another hesitant pause. "I needed a school with more challenge," she said. "I don't know how they found here."

"I was warned I might meet...unusual people here," Ellie said. "With the exception of my landlord, everyone seems relatively normal so far."

"Looks can be deceiving," Elizabeth pointed out. "Um. Not that I mean to scare you or anything."

Ellie laughed. "I understand," she said. "I've seen things that aren't as they appear myself."

Elizabeth grinned. "I know the feeling. You'll see more of those sort of things in Fandom. It gets routine after a while."

Ellie hesitated a moment, then asked, "Have you ever met anyone from another world here?"

Elizabeth nodded easily. "Yeah. Used to room with one," she said.

It was those she's met from other worlds before she came here that she won't talk about.

"Is she still here?" Ellie said, growing excited. "I'd love to talk to her about her home."

"Yeah. I don't see her here at the moment," Elizabeth replied, glancing at the crowd. "She's a bit quiet. Doesn't really talk much about where she's from. But I suppose you can always try."

"Where I'm from people who believe in extraterrestrial life quite often are looked at like they're crazy," Ellie said. "But I was told that here I would meet people who aren't from earth, and, well, I'm excited for the opportunity. Even if no one back home will believe me."

Elizabeth nodded. "Yeah, we get that too at home," she said, shrugging. "We have several students who aren't from earth though, so I'm sure you'll meet some of them."
