Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

"It's like nowhere else." Nadia answered honestly. "And you'll be fine, just watch out for the gremlins. And handwash your clothes in case the laundry machines go on strike again. And never call Parker 'Maureen'." She could go on, but it might be best not to freak him out too soon. "So, where are you from?"

Jude seemed to take this in stride. After all, this was the boy who once believed that zombies had invaded the mall. "Gremlins, clothes, Parker dudette, cool," he drawled before adding. "Toronto. Canada." Just in case.

"I've never been there." Nadia shrugged. "I'm from Argentina. We've got people from England, France, Sweden, and across the galaxy, too."

Jude chuckled. "Awwwwwesome, bra. Like, across-the galaxy across the galaxy?"

"As far as I can tell, yeah. It's pretty cool. And there are people from other times, too."

"Duuuuuuuuuuuuude." It was amazing the range of emotion Jude could imbue one single word with. "Heh heh. Totally not as harsh as I thought it was going to be."

Nadia was impressed. She rather wished she could have taken everything in stride so well her first day. She wondered what, if anything, would break this kid. "Our dean of students is a disembodied head in a tube."

Jude blinked. "Coooooool, bra. Like on that old show - Abrarangers?" He chuckled. "Awwwesome."

Jude is the epitome of zen. Nothing can make him lose his cool. He'd probably have to work up the energy for a spittake.

"Just like that," said Nadia, who'd never seen an episode of Abrarangers in her life. "There was a vampire here for awhile, too, but he graduated."

"Did he take night classes?" Jude blinked placidly at her.

"Nope. The windows have a special tinting. Which is good, because it probably helped keep them from melting when the demon threw fireballs at them."

C'mon, something had to shock this kid.

"Duuuuuuuude . . ." Jude said, his eyes widening. Could it be - "I wonder if I could learn to do that. That would be an awesome trick."

Seek to harsh his mellow do you? Many have tried. All have failed. Except Starr but really, girlfriend.

"I think it was part of the him being a demon thing." Nadia made one last bid at getting the kid to crack. "And don't be surprised if you should randomly wake up as a girl."

Maybe she should spike his drink? Not on the first day, though.

Jude looked down at himself and considered. "I could make a good dudette."

He had already spent a couple days as a girl. For some reason Wyatt couldn't have practiced dating with one of their several female friends, it had to be Jude in a wig . . .

Drat. "Probably. And if you need any help with shoes or anything if you do, let me know. I know what it's like to suddenly not have anything fit you quite right."

Jude winced. "Girl's shoes can be a killer," he muttered. "Thanks, bra. I'll keep it in mind."

"No problem." Nadia smiled. "Just one question, what does 'bra' mean? I assume you're not referring to women's underwear?"

Jude grinned. Well, a Jude-grin. Which would have been a rather blissful, stoned sort of smile on anyone else. "Well I can't call you 'bro' so I have to conjugate it in the feminine." Jude's slacker drawl should never have been able to wrap itself around words like 'conjugate'.

Nadia was duly impressed. "Makes sense." And really, as someone who's native language had plenty such conjugations, she shouldn't have been surprised. She just wasn't used to it happening in English. "Should I call you 'bro' then?"

Blame it on being Canadian.

"Sure, bra," Jude smiled. "I don't mind. I'll answer to almost anything."

"Well, good to meet you, bro. Welcome to Fandom."

"You, too, Nadia." Only by the time he was finished, it was more like 'Naaadiaaaaaaaaaaa'. "I think I'm gonna like it here."
