Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Tyler nodded to the girl in the hat, for no reason except he thought she was pretty.

"Hey. You another new one?"

Molly smiled back at him. "No, I've been here since January," she said and held out her hand. I'm Molly. Welcome to Fandom High."

"Tyler Durden," Tyler said, taking her hand for a relatively gentle shake. "And thank you. So what's it like here?"

"Nice to meet you, Tyler," Molly said with another smile.

"This place is so cool!" she went on enthusiastically. "There are students from different times and different planets. And we have a super hero as a teacher. And weird stuff happens all the time. Like, yesterday, the giant inflatable gremlin that we put up for decoration at the graduation ceremony came to life and had to be subdued by the seniors."

Tyler's mouth dropped open for a second, and he wondered what he had gotten himself into.

"Okay, either everyone here is doing enormous amounts of drugs? Or this place is majorly freaky." He scratched his head. "Do things get violent a lot? Like, with the gremlin?"

Molly shrugged. "Oh, every now and then. Not a whole lot though. We had a problem with vampires for a while, but all the bad ones are gone now. Then there were the snow monsters, but we shouldn't have to worry about those this time of year. And some other little stuff, but no, not a whole lot of violence. It's actually kind of quiet. Mostly."

"I could use quiet," Tyler said, almost sincerely. "Things got kind of chaotic, back home." And then that goody-goody turned us in to the police and wrecked everything, he thought but did not say.

"Except we don't have snow monsters in Delaware."

"I heard they had zombies back in the fall. Who knows what will show up next," Molly said with a shrug.

"So, you're from Delaware? How did you end up coming to Fandom High?"

"Zombies, huh?," Tyler was officially out of surprise, so he just went with it. "I guess I kind of respect zombies. They're pure about their urges, you know?"

He waved a hand vaguely through the air, and, if Molly was paying attention, she might notice a scar on its back shaped like a lip-print. "This and that. I was kind of in a bad place," he said sincerely. "Here seemed better. What about you?"

"I was a runaway back in my L.A. Me and my friends finally decided to stop running and it was either Fandom High or some special place for mutants back in California for me," Molly said with a shrug. "No contest really."

"I spent some time living on my own," Tyler said with genuine sympathy. "It was hard."

He hesitated, then asked a question that would have sounded very strange to him a few hiurs before. "So are you a mutant?"

"Oh, yeah. Sorry," Molly said with a sheepish grin. "I'm used to everybody knowing. Yes, super strength is my mutant power. Do they have mutants where you come from?"

Tyler instantly decided Molly would be very useful to have on his side.

"Not that I know of," he said. "I have my doubts about a couple people, but .... no. There a lot of little girls with super strength where you're from?"

Of course, Tyler was only six months older than Molly, so calling her "little girl" may have been more than slightly absurd.

Molly narrowed her eyes a little at the descriptor. "Not a whole lot of people with super strength where I'm from, no. Little or otherwise."

"No offense meant," Tyler protested rapidly. "Just ... when I think of super-strength, I think of that old TV show about the guy who turned all green and ugly when he got mad. Anything like that happen to you?"

Molly relented on the scowling and shook her head. "My eyes glow pink when I'm really drawing on my powers, but other than that, no. Just the same old me," she said.

"Pink eyes are pretty cool," Tyler said.

He drained the last of his punch. "I'm gonna go get another drink. See you around, Molly."
