Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Something like that." Dean looked the other guy up and down. "You wouldn't happen to be a Cedric would you?"

"No, not a Cedric. I'm a Walter." He stuck out his hand. "And you are?"

"Dean," he replied, shaking Walter's hand. "Don't suppose you know your way around here already, Walter do you?"

"I do. I've been here since January." He grinned at Dean. "You're not going to believe half of what I tell you about the place, though."

"Oh?" This sounded like it could be interesting, though somehow Dean though he wouldn't get lucky enough to have the school be haunted or anything like that. "Like what?"

"Monsters, muppet chefs, invasions of weetiny bunnies, instances where everyone on the island starts singing for no apparent reason, a multidimensional portal in one of the lockers, gremlins, people from other times myself included, aliens, demons, and mutants." He stopped for a second to go back through his list. "I'm sure I've left things out."

Dean blinked. Okay, maybe this place was his kind of interesting. And Dad sent them here because it was safe?

Wait a second. "You're from another time?"

"Yes. 1944. I'm not the only one, either." He grinned and shrugged. "You get used to it."

He shrugged. "I've got used to a lot weirder." He hesitated. "The portal thingy you mentioned -- that's not, like, something that happens a lot or anything, is it?"

"It's actually sort of moody. And we're not supposed to muck about with it anyway. I got detention the first week of school for going there with Pippi."

"Oh don't worry, I wasn't planning on mucking with it." Dean held up a hand in the universal stop gesture. "I've had more than enough of interdimensional portals to last me a lifetime."

"Careful what you say around here. It's practically an invitation for an interdimensional portal to open in the loo." Was he joking? Probably not.

"Great," Dean said, hoping that Walter was kidding. He was going to pretend he was anyway, otherwise he'd end up trying to prove that he could hold it for the entire summer just in case. "So is that where the invasions of weetiny bunnies came from?"

"No one knows where they came from, but they were talented dancers." Let's see how the new guy dealt with that. "The last time they were spotted was Easter. We've also had invasions of lemurs and muppet chickens. The bunnies were the best."

"I don't think I want to know how you know how good of dancers the bunnies were." Okay, this guy had to be pulling his leg. Didn't he?

"They did a dance routine for me one night." Walter grinned in a manner that would make it very difficult to tell if he was serious or not. Even though he was.

"After you've been here a while, it's hard to tell when someone's having you on, but ask around and other people will tell you about the bunnies. Or the weekend when most of the students here were spontaneously wee again. I married two girls that weekend. It was brilliant."

Dean shook his head slowly. If even half of what Walter was saying was the truth... "This place sounds like it's a lot weirder than Dad told me." Not that that was necessarily a bad thing. "Sounds like it'll make for an interesting summer."

"It won't be boring. That's about the only thing you can count on around here except your friends." Speaking of, Walter spotted Pip talking to another new student. "I'm going to get going now. I live in room 303 if you ever need anything."
