Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

Jamie had braced himself for the contact, so luckily another him didn't pop out to embarass himself.

"Yeah, summer school. Ain't that fun?" Jamie said with a little eyeroll. "I'm looking forward to that underwater basketweaving workshop aren't you?"

A funny one. Funny was good.

"I heard it was extreme basketweaving," Tyler said. "Doing it while snowboarding or getting pierced. You know, for the kids."

"That's the extreme lanyard making workshop," Jamie said with a chuckle. "Though honestly I haven't heard too much about the workshops they are offering yet here. You know anything I don't?"

"Not a thing that wasn't in the brochure, dude. I'm not sure why my dad decided to send me here."

He sniffed the air. "Place has a nice vibe to it, though."

Jamie cocked an eyebrow at that. "I don't know man. I saw a guy and a girl checking in *swords* over by the weapons check-in."

"Swords, huh?," Tyler said, glancing over to see if he could pick out who Jamie was talking to. "I never learned how to use those. Maybe they have a really good fencing team or something."

As he talked, his fingers went to a sunburst scar on one cheek.

"Heh. Those certainly weren't fencing foils I saw," Jamie said leaning back on the wall. "But I'm beginning to get the impression that this might not be a normal type of school."

Tyler raised his brows in mock-shock. "What gives you that impression, Jamie?"

But he was starting to feel a little uneasy himself. Something seemed ... different about some of the other students.

Then again, it had been a while since he actually went to school. That could be it.

"Well... there's one guy over there who's tattoos actually move. The chick with the sword is wearing something out of the middle ages and the big fat guy over by the buffet eats as much as the blob... I mean a guy I knew from back home," Jamie said pointing out each person he went along. "Hence... not normal."

"Chick might just be into Ren Faires," Tyler said. "My ex dragged me to one of those once. Some of 'em take it that seriously."

"But the moving tattoos ... that's freaky."

"Freaky," Jamie agreed as he watched the crowd of kids talking to each other. "You meet your roommate yet?"

Tyler nodded, pointing to X5. Or possibly Dean Wincester. "That one. He says his name is X5-494, but he seems kind of cool."

"What about you?"

"X5-494?" Jamie said with a blink. "Huh. And no I haven't. You haven't met a 'N. Santos' yet, have you?"

Tyler thought for a second. "Can't say I have, sorry. I'll holler if anybody introduces themselves to me that way."

"Thanks, man. I'll see you around."

"See you," Tyler agreed, and wandered away.
