Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"I mean, my roommate? He's a boy. And a really cute boy." She looked around for him, then pointed in Sam's direction. "There, that's him."

Marie's eyes grew wide. "Wow, he is really cute," she agreed. "But you have to share a room with him? That's... weird."

She glanced around and pointed to Willow. "That's my roommate," she said. "She seems really nice."

"He's got a brother, too," Dawn informed her, "and yeah, maximum weirdness, but he seems nice so far." Only time would tell if he was a demon or a vampire or a freshman.

Dawn followed where Marie had pointed. And her jaw dropped. "Willow?"

"Yeah, that's what she said her name was," Marie said. "You know her? She said she's from some small town in California. Sunny... glen, maybe?"

"Dale," Dawn said, still confused. She'd have to talk to Willow later--it would be very bad if she'd dipped into the magic books again. "Sunnydale. I went to high school there, too, briefly, but she was a few years ahead of me."

"Oh, so you're a freshman, too?" Marie asked. "Because I think Willow said she was a junior."

"Junior?" Dawn was starting to get a headache. She rubbed between her eyebrows. "No, I'm a junior, too. Maybe it's not who I thought it was, or she got held back, or something."

Which would prove that the redheaded girl wasn't Willow Rosenberg. "Um, kind of off topic, but do you know if this place has shrimp?"

"One of my friends has a theory about alternate universes," she explained, "and there's this one universe where there was no shrimp, and I was wondering if maybe we were in it."

She mentally facepalmed. Yeah, because that was the way to make a good first impression, Dawn.

"Oh," Marie said simply. Her father always said people from California were a bunch of drugged out hippies. She wondered if maybe he was right. Of course, that would make her roommate a drugged out hippie and Willow had seemed normal. Huh.

"So what brings you to Fandom High?" Marie asked.

"My sister wanted to keep me out of trouble for the summer," Dawn said, trying to regain some conversational ground. "What about you?"

"My parents wanted me to have a 'unique educational opportunity'," Marie explained.

Dawn looked around. "Okay, castle, but otherwise it looks pretty normal, don't you think?"
