Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

Marie giggled. "No, it didn't sound rehearsed at all," she assured her. "I'm Marie D'Ancanto, fifteen, Freshman, Southern Baptist, from Mississippi. She drawled a little on the last word. "In case the accent didn't give it away."

She looked at the cage Willow was carrying. "You've got a pet."

"Amy!" Willow held up the portable cage. "She's a rat. But she's not very ratty! Hardly rat like at all, except for the tail and the whiskers, and the fur. Is - is that going to be a problem? She's very quiet."

"Oh no!" Marie quickly said. "Not a problem at all."

She leaned down and wiggled her fingers at the cage. "Nice to meet you, Amy."

Amy sat up and looked at Marie with what might have appeared to be a great deal of intelligence for a rat. Willow, noticing this, tried to hide her behind her books. "Rats. Ha. So silly. So - so what brings you to Fandom, Marie? Tell me all about you." She smiled encouragingly.

"My parents were looking for a unique summer camp experience for me, found information on this place and decided to let me try it," Marie explained, not noticing any unusual behavior on Amy's part since she had never been around rats before. "If I like it, they're going to let me enroll in school here in the fall. What about you?"

"Transfer," Willow said. "I used to go to U... you probably haven't heard of Sunnydale High School. Yep, good ol' SHS. Sunnydale High. My old school. Which I didn't feel like going to any more so I transferred. Here. To meet new people."

"No, I've never heard of Sunnydale," Marie confirmed. "You said it's in California? I've never been there, but I'd like to travel some day. Actually, my dream is to travel up north, across Canada to Alaska."

"It's a couple of hours outside of LA," Willow said. "Kinda small, one-Starbucks sort of place. Oh, but Alaska! You could see whales! And bald eagles!"

"And polar bears," Marie added with a grin. "And you think your town was small? We didn't even have a Starbucks."

"Oh no!" Willow looked horrified. "We must fix that. I will introduce you to the wonder of mochas. No student should be without them."

"That would be cool," Marie said. "I wonder if there's a Starbucks on the island. It's pretty small."

"There's got to be something," Willow said. "They can't expect us to learn and study without caffiene. It's not human! And I know from things that aren't... hey, says here our school colors are blue and gold!"

"I think the school colors at my hometown high school were blue and gold," Marie said, oblivious to Willow's abrupt subject change.

"Our mascot is a gremlin?" Willow blinked. "Huh. Guess that's better than my old one. It was a pig. Very cute, but a little too apt to being eaten."

"A gremlin?" Marie repeated. "That's definitely different."

"Maybe it stands for something?" Willow suggested. "Like - Like Great Reading Educates.... Yeah, I got nothing."

Marie giggled and looked around. "Well, I have a feeling this place is definitely going to be interesting."

"It's not Sunnydale," Willow said. "I'm happy. I'm kinda doing the whole 'new beginning' thing." She tried to make air quotes even as she held on to all of her things.

"A new beginning?" Marie asked. Then she blushed. "I'm sorry," she apologized quickly. "I don't mean to pry."

"Prying is a-okay," Willow said. "I mean, about this. About stuff. About - " topic change, coming up! Sort of. "I had a boyfriend. It didn't go so well."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Marie said, still slightly embarrassed about prying. Way to make a good first impression on the person she was living with this summer. "I... have never had a boyfriend," she confessed.

"Not worth it," Willow said. "They break your heart into itty bitty pieces even after you love them in spite of the whole once a month problem but noooo some skanky whore with a microphone has to come along and - and ha ha! I'm babbling again aren't I? I do that."

Marie tried to follow Willow's babbling but got lost on the once a month problem thing. Wasn't that something the guys put up with from their girlfriends?

She shrugged and smiled. "That's okay," she said. "I'm kind of quiet, so it works out."

Willow smiled. "Sometimes I'm told I have too many thoughts."

"I don't think you can have too many thoughts," Marie said. She looked around at the sea of people and was grateful that she had found her roommate so easily and that she seemed so nice.

"I guess we should mingle with some other people," she suggested. "I'll see you upstairs later?"
