Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Wait, you got an informational packet?" Janet plopped down into a seat near the redheaded girl and started munching on a brownies. Today was not a day to eat healthy. "They didn't have informational packets when I started here. Oh, and hi. I'm Janet Fraiser."

"Willow Rosenberg," she said at once. "Sunnydale, California. Sixteen years old. Junior!" She added that last one as though she was in danger of forgetting it. "I mean, once school starts. I guess now I'm just a camper. Junior camper Willow, that's me."

Janet grinned. "I've just finished my junior year, so I guess we're all just campers for the summer. So how come you picked this place to come to, anyway?"

"I wanted somewhere new," Willow said, drawing herself up as though she were very worldly and above things like...whatever it was she was talking about. "Somewhere with new people. New... non-boyfriendy people. You?"

"Somewhere new can be good," she said, giving Willow a curious look when she started trying to look like she wasn't a totally lost newbie. "Especially new people, and especially after a break-up. If he was a jerk, we can eat ice cream and trash him later." Janet paused. "My uncle thought this place would be a little more challenging than my last high school."

"Where was your last high school?" Willow asked, more than happy to make the topic all about Janet.

Oh, look. Awkward. Because Janet didn't want to talk about herself.

"Colorado Springs," said Janet. She took another bite of brownie. "It was a pretty boring place. I mean, nothing interesting ever happens in Colorado." Except the occasional alien incursion or mysterious, nigh-incurable plague, but they always took care of those quickly.

Willow gave a too-bright laugh. "Boy, that sure is true. Just like Sunnydale. Boring, boring, boring."

One more curious look, coming right up. And a suppressed grin. "Really? So it was the kind of place where you'd hang out in the park with your friends until midnight because there was nothing else to do?"

"Actually I did that more often than you'd think," Willow said, mostly to herself.

"Well, I'm sure things will be far less boring for you here," said Janet, standing up. "But I'm out of junk food now, and I can't really survive without my daily dose of chocolate. Maybe we'll end up in the same workshops in summer camp or something, though."
