Arden wasn't sure if she was supposed to be here over break week. On the one hand no one had said she shouldn't show up, even if there were no classes, on the other, perhaps it was just assumed she'd realize she wasn't supposed to be here, rather than needing to be told what to do. Arden has spent a few hours before her shift started dithering about this and was going to spend the next few the same way, apparently. Eventually, she'd settled on going through the stacks and doing an audit of the books. Not all of them, of course, that was an impossible task, but checking on the books that had been borrowed since the beginning of the year, making sure they'd been returned and placed back in the correct locations.

Though, considering the size of this place, she probably should have packed some snacks before venturing off.

And that would be Kamala approaching the desk with a timid look in her face and two Squishies in her hands.

"Soooo.About yesterday's broadcast? The whole 1% thing was just a joke because... Well I was just trying to impress a certain someone," Kamala said offering a red Squishy. "I'm sorry I hurt your feelings."

Arden looked up from where she was cross-referencing a couple of books and gave Kamala a softly amused smile. "I know," she said, holding out her arms not for the Squishy, but a hug. "I'm good, I was teasing back on the air, promise."

Beat.

"Although I might not have sounded like it because I was trying not to die in the middle of the broadcast."

"Oh good!" Kamala said, sounding relieved and returning the hug. "Because my mouth has gotten me into more trouble than I can count. I just hoped I didn't screw up again."

"You were flirting," Arden said. "I get it! Besides, I feel like...she..." Yeah, she saw you, squirrels "...doesn't get to hear good things a lot, you know? But we're good, Kamala. Bestie status unchanged."

She took the peace offering Squishy and sipped it.

"I am gonna bust your balls about her though. Have you considered how she'd look in a Captain Marvel cosplay?"

Kamala's eyes widened a bit at that. "NO! But I am now!"

For a brief second there was just a bit of a grin on Kamala's face before another epiphany hit her.

"Oh my God. I have a type."

"You hadn't realized that?" Arden asked, cackling. "Like spicy blonds, huh?"

“Hey! This is a whole new discovery for me!” Kamala protested through her own laughter. “I’m still figuring it out!”

"Definitely gotta convince her to dress up as Captain Marvel for Halloween," Arden said, still laughing. The chuckles end and she asks, "You gonna tell your parents? If it becomes a thing?"

“I’m going to have to,” Kamala admitted. “But I don’t think it will be a big deal. We thought my brother was gay for the longest time.”

"His wife is hot," was Arden's very useful contribution to that. "Um. Sorry, if that's disrespectful to your sister-in-law."

“Not at all,” Kamala said, agreeing with Arden’s assessment. “She’s a catch. I have no idea how my brother landed her. She is way out of his league.”

"The only guess I can come up with is off-limits because he's your brother and also wrong anyway, because you said he's super-devout, yeah?" She shrugged. "Guess then it's just love, maybe. A slow-burn thing where she slowly fell for him as she got to get to know him?"

“Yes,” Kamala said looking at Arden pointedly. “And it didn’t help that he was completely clueless.”

What looks? Arden saw no looks! No reason for looks, either!

"Well, it's nice that it worked out like that for them," Arden said, also with no emphasis.

“I think you’ll find it happens to a lot of people that way,” Kamala said continuing with her pointed looks. “After all not everyone can be like my parents and bond over a Bon Jovi album.”

Wow. This is some important list-checking she had to do!

"Was that how it was with you and ya girl?" she asked, innocently.

Kamala smiled. “Actually I bought a plant from her,” she said cheerfully. “And then I had to go back the next week because I killed the first one. And… now I just find a way to hang out with her. She’s not my girl yet. She seems… Skittish? Unsure? I just want to make sure she’s in a comfortable place and ease her into it.”

"I remember the death of that poor plant," Arden snickered. "But yeah, I get that same vibe: skittish and unsure." Arden reached over to hug Kamala. "Making sure she's comfortable is real good of you."

“Thanks!” Kamala said hugging her back. “To be honest I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve never had a boyfriend let alone a girlfriend. So I’m just making it up as I go along. If it doesn’t work out at least I’ll have a friend.”

"Same," Arden snerked. "But I don't think she has, either, so I'm pretty sure you both get to make it up together."

“I kind figured that but honestly that makes me feel a little better,” Kamala admitted. “It’s nice that we’ll have class together. I can’t keep going into the shop to buy plants every week.”
