Library (05/04)

Not having ACJ to go to, Rory actually opened the library on time for once.

Which wasn't all that helpful, anyway, since she was mostly asleep still.

Of course, she's not Veronica. So it's not like it was mesmerizing. Her head was just tilted.

"I'm not sure yet. That depends on . . . well, when I can lay plans in motion," replied Archie. "At the moment it looks as though I will be here for at least the first half of summer."

Archie felt inexplicably compelled to salute. "I can't, Rory," he said quietly.

Archie looked guilty as he shook his head and shrugged. "I can't quite explain it. I've got quite the challenge ahead of me, and what holds me back is the knowledge that -- absurd as this sounds -- as long as I'm here I'm safe. I can't, or won't, make myself meet those challenges when I know that as long as I remain here my existence is, to some degree, a charmed one."

He picked absently at a loose thread on his cuff. "I love it here. But I don't believe I can grow in the manner I need to as long as I stay."

Archie didn't want to promise anything, but just didn't have the heart to upset Rory.

"I'll do my best," he told her, hoping it didn't seem like too much of an evasion. "If it's at all possible, I will."
